This text is a first person account given by a Seri woman of an early 20th century balsa voyage made as a frightened child between the Gulf of California islands of Tiburon and San Esteban, a journey of around 15 kilometers. On the phonology and origin of the labialized dorsal consonants in Seri
This study examines the phonology and historical development of the labialized dorsal consonants in Seri (Cmiique Iitom), a language of northwestern Mexico. This language has a rare contrast between velar and uvular fricatives, each with labialized counterparts, forming six voiceless dorsal phonemes. Some names are simple, but others are complex, often constructed from common noun phrases. Two productive Seri prefixes, negative and passive, are in a limited number of cases reanalyzed as part of the verb stem.
