  • Aversion Treatment of Alcoholics by Succinylcholine-Induced Apneic Paralysis; An Analysis of Early Changes in Drinking Behavior

Mary-Frances Madill, Dugal Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•Quarterly Journal of Studies on…•1966

In a clinical trial of an aversive conditioning therapy for alcoholism, the unconditioned stimulus (ucs) was a paralysis and suppression of respiration, induced by intravenous injection of 20 mg. of succinylcholine chloride, and the conditioned stimulus (cs) was the patient's habitual alcoholic beverage. Forty-five inpatients were randomly allotted to one of three groups: conditioning (cs and ucs), pseudo-conditioning (ucs alone), and placebo (cs…

  • Aversion Therapies in the Treatment of Alcoholism

    S G LAVERTY•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1966

Aversion therapies have a common hypothesis, namely that unpleasant effects generated in treatment will be reproduced when contact is resumed with alcohol. In practice, however, the formation of a conditioned aversion is not clearly described. A form of conditioning using chemically induced apnea as an unconditioned stimulus is described. The results cannot be explained in terms of straightforward Pavlovian conditioning but do suggest that a trau…

  • Characteristics of a conditioned response in human subjects during extinction trials following a single traumatic conditioning trial

    Dugal Campbell, R E Sanderson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Abnormal & Social…•1964•Citada por: 2

A single experience of respiratory paralysis can be used to establish a conditioned response (CR) to a hitherto neutral stimulus. Respiratory paralysis to those undergoing it is horrific but not painful. The CR does not extinguish but becomes stronger as time passes despite repeated extinction trial

  • Overinclusive thinking and delusions in schizophrenic patients

    R W Payne, W K Caird et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Abnormal & Social…•1964

  • An Investigation of a New Aversive Conditioning Treatment for Alcoholism
