Educational, Racial, and Geographic Inequalities in Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis among Brazilian Women
Fifteen-Year Trends in Behavioral Risk Factors and Metabolic Health Conditions for Non-Communicable Diseases
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide and disproportionately affect certain demographic groups due to structural inequalities. In Brazil, racial and gender disparities influence the distribution of risk and protective factors for NCDs. To analyze time trends (2009–2023) in modifiable behavioral risk factors (alcohol abuse, smoking, physical activity, and vegetable consumption) and metabolic conditions (obesity,…
Association between family violence and physical activity in Brazilian adolescents
The study aims to assess the association between family physical violence and different domains of physical activity in students. Cross-sectional study with data from the National School Health Survey 2015. Physical activity was measured with a validated questionnaire and comprised the previous seven days. Physical activity domains investigated were commuting, leisure, physical education class, and total physical activity. Family physical violenc…
Trajectories of physical activity patterns across the life course in Mexican adults
The present study aimed to identify factors associated with distinct trajectories of physical activity (PA) patterns in Mexican adults during a 16-year follow-up. We included 9,958 adults aged 35 years or older enrolled in The Mexico City Prospective Study, a prospective cohort study conducted from 1998 to 2004 to 2015–2019. PA was assessed through self-reported questionnaires and categorized into three patterns: inactive, weekend warrior, and re…
Longitudinal changes in sensory impairments and subsequent falls and fall-related injuries among middle-aged and older adults
Longitudinal changes in sensory impairments are strongly associated with the risk of falls and fall-related injuries. Recovery from sensory impairment appears to be linked to a reduced risk, underscoring the potential benefits of interventions aimed at restoring sensory function
Weekend warriors, physical activity pattern and all-cause mortality
Weekend warriors and regularly active physical activity patterns were associated with lower all-cause mortality in adults without and with hypertension, particularly when session duration was ≥30 min/day
Examining Racial Differences in the Effects of the Brazilian State-Level Police Substance Use Prevention Program in Schools
Adolescent alcohol and tobacco use are associated with various health risks, including cognitive and developmental impairments. Minority youth may face additional vulnerabilities, such as racism and discrimination, which contribute to stress and an increased risk of substance use. This study examined the effects of a school-based prevention program implemented by the Brazilian state-level police forces in schools, focusing on differences across r…
Patterns of Alcohol Access Among Brazilian Adolescents
Physical Activity Intensity Measurement and Health
Physical activity guidelines for health recommend any type of unstructured physical activity for health promotion. Adults should perform at least 150-300 min per week of moderate intensity or 75-150 min per week of vigorous intensity activities, or an equivalent combination of the two intensities. However, the relationship between physical activity intensity and longevity remains a debated topic, with conflicting perspectives offered by epidemiol…
Differential influence from family and best friend on adolescent drug use
We aimed to analyze the association between latent classes of drug use of the ‘closest psychosocial network’ (CPN) (i.e. parents, siblings, and best friend) of adolescents, and adolescents’ lifetime drug use practices (tobacco, alcohol, and binge drinking). A prospective cohort study, nested in a randomized controlled trial, was performed among public school students in six Brazilian cities (N = 3,148; 51.4% girls; Mage=12.6 years), for 21 months…
Use of integrative and complementary health practices by Brazilian population
We found that 6% of Brazilian adults reported using ICHP in the previous 12 months. Women, middle-aged individuals, chronic patients, people with depression, and wealthier Brazilians are more likely to use any type of ICHP. Of note, rather than suggesting to expand the offer of these practices in the Brazilian public health system, this study diagnosed Brazilians' behavior of seeking for complementary healthcare
Leisure time physical activity among older adults in Brazil
The practice of leisure time physical activity brings several health benefits, such as the prevention of noncommunicable diseases. Investigating the temporal trend of physical activity practice in older adults by sociodemographic characteristics and geographical regions could be important to plan public health policies and effective interventions. This is a time series study that analyzes the temporal trend of leisure time physical activity among…
Socioeconomic inequalities in the consumption of minimally processed and ultra-processed foods in Brazilian adolescents
In this study, we evaluated socioeconomic inequalities in the consumption of in natura/minimally processed and ultra-processed foods among adolescents. We used data from the Brazilian National Survey of School Health (PeNSE), 2015. According to the self-reported consumption of beans, vegetables and fruits, a score of in natura/minimally processed foods was generated (0-21 points). Sodas, sweets, instant noodles, and ultra-processed meat were used…
Binge drinking in Brazilian adolescents
This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of binge drinking and other alcohol consumption patterns and analyze the sociodemographic characteristics associated with binge drinking among Brazilian adolescents aged 15 to 17 years. A cross-sectional household survey including 2,315 adolescents from the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey who answered a questionnaire on alcohol consumption (weekly frequency, average amount consumed in a drinking d…
Socioeconomic inequalities in physical activity in Brazil
Inequality in total physical activity and leisure-time physical activity favors the most educated groups in Brazil. Over time, relative educational inequality decreased for total and leisure-time physical activity, while no progress was found for absolute inequality
Adults at high-risk of severe coronavirus disease-2019 (Covid-19) in Brazil
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the proportion and total number of the general adult population who may be at higher risk of severe Covid-19 in Brazil. METHODS: We included 51,770 participants from a nationally representative, household-based health survey (PNS) conducted in Brazil. We estimated the proportion and number of adults (≥ 18 years) at risk of severe Covid-19 by sex, educational level, race/ethnicity, and state based on the presence of one or m…
Why precision medicine is not the best route to a healthier world
Precision medicine has been announced as a new health revolution. The term precision implies more accuracy in healthcare and prevention of diseases, which could yield substantial cost savings. However, scientific debate about precision medicine is needed to avoid wasting economic resources and hype. In this commentary, we express the reasons why precision medicine cannot be a health revolution for population health. Advocates of precision medicin…
Prevalence of active transportation among adults in Latin America and the Caribbean

MEDLINE, Excerpta Medica (Embase), SportDiscus, Lilacs, MediCarib, Web of Science, OVID, CINAHL, Scopus, Google Scholar, National Transportation Library, and TRIS/TRID were searched for articles on active transportation published between January 2003 and December 2014 with …
Modos de vida entre pessoas que tiveram câncer no Brasil em 2013

Population attributable fraction
Epidemiology is the study of occurrence, distribution and determinants of health-related events, including the application of that knowledge to the prevention and control of health problems. However, epidemiological studies, in most cases, have limited their research questions to determinants of health outcomes. Research related to the application of knowledge for prevention and control of diseases have been neglected. In this comment, we present…
