In the Sicilian town of Palermo, two main languages are spoken, Italian and Sicilian. Finding Fudduni
This paper examines the memory, identity, and contemporary significance of Petru Fudduni, a semi-legendary Sicilian folk poet of the 17th century, among local people in Palermo. Building upon archival and field research we conducted in January-February 2025, we argue that Fudduni is a ‘floating signifier’ that acquires different meanings depending on the socio-cultural values of the people who remember him and his stories. Drawing upon 15 months of research conducted in 2018-2019 in Bhaktapur, Nepal, this paper examines how middle-class women experience and make sense of gyāstrik (an umbrella term for multiple gut disorders) as an embodiment of social change. Enumerating dietary injustices and distress following unmet middle-class expectations of well-being and domestic intimacy as a primary cause of the condition, these women narratively problematised social norms…

What Makes a Family? A Visual Approach to Ontological and Substantial Dimensions of the Domestic in Nepal
What makes a family? On the one hand, tangible aspects such as a shared household, eating practices, and marriage alliances come to mind.
