In this article we analyse the intersection of system collapse, the crisis of the embodied citizen-subject, and the experiential dimension of wide-reaching social and political change. This article discusses Afro-Cuban dance and its agentive powers in the global dance business, characterized on the one hand by the public’s appetite for novelty and exoticism and on the other hand by performers’ precarity and uncertainty. This article is an anthropological exploration of the role of dance in tourism-led entrepreneurship and tourism-led mobilities in Cuba. Based on ethnographic research and employing an autoethnographic lens, the article examines the imaginaries and gendered performances of Cubanness that play out in touristic settings as part of dance trips organized on the island for international tourists. Restrictions on movement and requirements for social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic have triggered an almost total shift to digital creation, teaching, and promotion in the field of dance. By employing an ethnographic lens, this article explores collective and individual embodied knowledge acquired through online dance classes, with a particular focus on Cuban social dance genres.
