  • Comparative neuropathology in aging primates

    Open Access•Carmen Freire‐Cobo, Melissa K Edler et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2021

While humans exhibit a significant degree of neuropathological changes associated with deficits in cognitive and memory functions during aging, non‐human primates (NHP) present with more variable expressions of pathological alterations among individuals and species. As such, NHP with long life expectancy in captivity offer an opportunity to study brain senescence in the absence of the typical cellular pathology caused by age‐related neurodegenera…

  • Brain organization of gorillas reflects species differences in ecology

    Open Access•Sarah K Barks, Michael E Calhoun et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2015•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 52

Gorillas include separate eastern ( Gorilla beringei ) and western ( Gorilla gorilla ) African species that diverged from each other approximately 2 million years ago. Although anatomical, genetic, behavioral, and socioecological differences have been noted among gorilla populations, little is known about variation in their brain structure. This study examines neuroanatomical variation between gorilla species using structural neuroimaging. Postmo…

  • Neuropeptide Y ‐immunoreactive Neurons in the Cerebral Cortex of Humans and Other Haplorrhine Primates

Open Access•Mary Ann Raghanti, TIFFINI CONLEY et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2013

We examined the distribution of neurons immunoreactive for neuropeptide Y ( NPY ) in the posterior part of the superior temporal cortex ( B rodmann's area 22 or area T pt) of humans and nonhuman haplorrhine primates. NPY has been implicated in learning and memory and the density of NPY ‐expressing cortical neurons and axons is reduced in depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and A lzheimer's disease. Due to the role that NPY plays in both …

  • Brain structure variation in great apes, with attention to the mountain gorilla ( Gorilla beringei beringei )

    Open Access•Chet C Sherwood, Michael R Cranfield et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2004

This report presents data regarding the brain structure of mountain gorillas ( Gorilla beringei beringei ) in comparison with other great apes. Magnetic resonance (MR) images of three mountain gorilla brains were obtained with a 3T scanner, and the volume of major neuroanatomical structures (neocortical gray matter, hippocampus, thalamus, striatum, and cerebellum) was measured. These data were included with our existing database that includes 23 …

  • Islet cell antibodies in Sulawesi macaques

    Open Access•Charles F Howard, Ta-Yun Fang et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1999

Older monkeys of the Sulawesian species Macaca nigra spontaneously develop a lesion in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans in which there is deposition of amyloid and gradual degeneration of all cells, which can lead eventually to development of diabetes mellitus. Islet cell antibodies (ICA), formed in response to the release of cellular antigens, can be used to detect the islet lesion and to monitor the progression of each monkey toward diabetes…

  • Effects of management methods, social organization, and physical space on primate behavior and health

    Open Access•Joseph Erwin, Gene P Sackett•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1990

The incidence of clinical treatment in a large colony of pigtailed macaques ( Macaca, nemestrina ) was studied retrospectively to assess the effectiveness of three sequential housing and management protocols. In the initial standard protocol, groups were housed in single rooms, with each room occupied by a different group after daily cleaning. In the experimental protocol, animals were housed in two‐room suites dedicated exclusively to the reside…
