This qualitative study explored Thinking a Lot (TAL), a culturally patterned idiom of distress through which individuals describe and make sense of psychological and somatic suffering, among Vietnamese men who have sex with men (MSM). The results of 51 overnight measurements of basal metabolic rate (BMR) in a sample of pastoral nomads resident permanently in Phala, Tibet Autonomous Region, China, are reported. Past studies demonstrated a culturally driven seasonality of diet, with very low summer and very high winter caloric intake. Fecal steroid analysis of ovarian cycles in free‐ranging baboons
This paper reports field and laboratory tests of serial sampling, solid phase extraction, and microradioimmunoassay methods for the collection, preservation, and analysis of fecal steroids. The field study was conducted in a troop of 87 yellow baboons ( Papio cynocephalus ) in the Tana River Primate Reserve, Kenya. Serial samples of four focal females and opportunistic sampling of 18 additional females over 22 days of sampling yielded a total of …
Nursing Frequency, Gonadal Function, and Birth Spacing Among !Kung Hunter-Gatherers
Mothers among !Kung hunter-gatherers nurse briefly and frequently, with brief intervals between nursing bouts (mean ± standard error, 13.19 ± 1.28 minutes). The low levels of 17β-estradiol and progesterone in the serum of the mother are correlated with infant's age and with interbout interval, but not with total nursing time. Maternal gonadal function is apparently suppressed by a timing-dependent, prolactin-mediated effect of breast stimulation.…
