Testing Sign Congruence Between Two Parameters
We test the null hypothesis that two parameters have the same sign, assuming that (asymptotically) normal estimators are available. Examples of this problem include the analysis of heterogeneous treatment effects, causal interpretation of reduced‐form estimands, meta‐studies, and mediation analysis. A number of tests were recently proposed. We recommend a test that is simple and rejects more often than many of these recent proposals. Like all oth…
Risk Preference Types, Limited Consideration, and Welfare
We provide sufficient conditions for semi-nonparametric point identification of a mixture model of decision making under risk, when agents make choices in multiple lines of insurance coverage (contexts) by purchasing a bundle. As a first departure from the related literature, the model allows for two preference types. In the first one, agents behave according to standard expected utility theory with CARA Bernoulli utility function, with an agent-…
Missing Treatments
This article analyzes the problem of identifying a treatment effect with imperfect observability of the treatment received by the population. Imperfect observability may be due to item/survey nonresponse or to noncompliance with randomly assigned treatments. I derive sharp worst-case bounds that are a function of the available prior information on the distribution of missing treatments. Under the assumption of monotone treatment response, I show …
Rounding Probabilistic Expectations in Surveys
Rounding is the familiar practice of reporting one value whenever a real number lies in an interval. Uncertainty about the extent of rounding is common when researchers analyze survey responses to numerical questions. The prevalent practice has been to take numerical responses at face value, even though many may in fact be rounded. This paper studies the rounding of responses to survey questions that ask persons to state the percent-chance that s…
