The Impact of Providing Free HIV Self-testing on Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Men who have Sex with Men in Hunan, China
Ethical Decision-making of Health Professionals Caring for People Living with HIV/Aids in Hunan, China
Numerous ethical issues surged the moment acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was discovered. As advocates of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), health professionals encounter many ethical dilemmas in clinical practice. However, it remains unclear how health professionals solve these issues. The descriptive qualitative research was conducted through semi-structured interviews with 22 health professionals from May to August 2018. Three the…
Consistency of Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity in Middle School Physical Education
This study assessed the consistency of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in a sample of middle school physical education lessons. Random intercept hierarchical linear regressions were employed to model the relationship between consistency of MVPA and independent variables, including lesson and teacher characteristics. Larger classes spent significantly more time in consistent MVPA in the absence of controlling for teacher characterist…
She Decides
The number of HIV-AIDS cases among African American women (AAW) continues to rise. AAW currently account for about 65% of AIDS diagnoses among women in the United States. Furthermore, among AAW living with HIV-AIDS, heterosexual transmission remains the leading cause of HIV spread. Indeed, examining AAWs sex partner selection patterns will be a key step in understanding how to support HIV prevention for this population. A grounded-theory study wa…
Using Qualitative Inquiry and Participatory Research Approaches to Develop Prevention Research
Application of life course theory (LCT) holds promise for advancing knowledge toward the elimination of health disparities. This article validates the usefulness of employing a life course perspective when conducting health disparities research. We provide an overview of LCT as it applies to our research program in prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among Latino teen parents. We illustrate the goodness-of-fit of our research with th…

Young Parents’ Relationship Characteristics, Shared Sexual Behaviors, Perception of Partner Risks, and Dyadic Influences
Rising rates of heterosexually transmitted HIV among youth and young adults, particularly from ethnic minorities, create an urgent need to understand risk factors and perceptions of risk within the context of couple relationships. This study examined reports of young mothers and fathers (predominantly Latino) about background characteristics, relationship quality and length, HIV-related risk factors, and perceptions of partners' behaviors and per…
Relationship, Power, and Other Influences on Self-Protective Sexual Behaviors of African American Female Adolescents
This study examined risky sexual behaviors, gender, and power issues affecting risk taking, and factors most likely to promote self-protection among female African American adolescents. A cross-sectional design was used for data collection. The sample included 130 adolescents ranging from 14 to 20 years of age, who completed questionnaires. Multiple regression analysis resulted in two models that accounted for 23% and 37% of the variance. Behavio…
Vulnerable Adolescent Mothers’ Perceptions of Maternal Role and Hiv Risk
Pregnant adolescents and young mothers living in Los Angeles County are vulnerable to acquiring HIV/AIDS through sexual transmission because they lack the resources, social status, and power to protect themselves. In this article we describe adolescent mothers' (n = 76) responses to an HIV prevention program. The design of the study was based in ethnography, the anthropological tradition of qualitative research. Many of the pregnant teens and you…
Vulnerable Adolescent Mothers’ Perceptions of Maternal Role and Hiv Risk
Project CHARM
Effects were examined of a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention program for adolescent mothers offered in pregnant minor and parenting programs in Los Angeles County. The sample included young women (N = 497) of predominantly poor, Latina backgrounds who had complete data from baseline to the one-year follow-up. The treatment group demonstrated statistically significant improvements in AIDS knowledge and intentions to use condoms, and fe…
Young Latino Fathers’ Perceptions of Paternal Role and Risk for Hiv/Aids
This study explored young Latino fathers’ feelings about their fathering role and perceptions of risk for HIV. Many teen parents have engaged in activities that place them at risk for exposure to HIV. Compared with young mothers, little is know about teen fathers. Young Latino fathers (N = 45) living in the inner-city participated in focus group interviews; 10 also completed individual interviews. Participants provide an account of the influence …
