L’amour/la mort
Sitting in a small apartment, the main character of Haroun’s A Season in France (2018), Abbas, reads Achille Mbembe’s Politiques de l’inimitié (2016). The act of reading this significant book can be understood as resistance on the part of Abbas and as overt criticism of power on the part of Haroun. Resistance to the structural violence perpetrated on African immigrants – the ‘marginal(ized)’ population of the empire – is still a necessary act in …
Assessment of Culture-Negative Neonatal Early-Onset Sepsis
Culture-negative neonatal sepsis remains a significant challenge for the neonatologist, since the time elapsed between the moment sepsis is suspected and the initiation of empirical therapy can make the difference between survival and death. Continued efforts are needed to develop more reliable and effective diagnostic tools for timely and appropriate intervention
Cranial Ultrasound in the Management of Hydrocephalus in Newborns
Ultrasound examination proves to be a worthy tool capable of detecting the aetiology; however, in several cases, a complementary imaging examination might be needed. The therapeutic approach should take into consideration the diverse aetiology of the disease

Death and negritude
In 2018, Jean-Pierre Bekolo’s Miraculous Weapons won the Sembène Ousmane Prize at FESPACO. The film carries the title of a 1946 poetry volume by the ‘father’ of negritude, Aimé Césaire, and it feels very familiar, but also quite distinctive from the rest of Bekolo’s oeuvre. There are old themes (revolt, race, freedom), but they are represented with updated artifices (e.g. drone shots) and new stylizations (at least for Bekolo), such as high contr…
Everything Begins in the Middle
Xala is perhaps the film that best encapsulates Ousmane Sembene’s entire career. It also hints at the future of African cinemas and the next generations of African and/or African diasporic filmmakers. To pull at this thread, my reading of Xala goes through the prism of African futurity, as understood by Senegalese philosopher Felwine Sarr and others, and focuses on the final scene and on several female characters. Initially laser-focused on colon…
Asymptomatic Maternal Diseases Presenting with Symptomatic Neonatal Manifestations
Prenatal exams and investigations throughout pregnancy are a good opportunity to detect subclinical diseases or predispositions. As newborns usually develop non-specific signs, one should have experience and pay attention to differentiating among etiologies. Our paper takes a reversed approach to the usual medical diagnosis pathway: from infant to mother instead of from mother to infant, proving that inter-specialty collaboration can work bi-dire…
Cerebral Ultrasound at Term-Equivalent Age
Background/Objectives: Our research aimed to assess if correlations could be found between items evaluated at the cerebral ultrasound performed at term-equivalent age (TEA) and neuro-motor outcomes evaluated at 12 and 24 months of corrected age in a group of preterm infants. Methods: The following were assessed: the Levine Index, the diagonals of the lateral ventricles, the size of the ventricular midbody, the sinocortical distance, the width of …
Sars-CoV-2 Infection during Pregnancy Followed by Thalamic Neonatal Stroke—Case Report
A neonatal stroke is a cerebrovascular process caused by interruption of cerebral blood flow that occurs with an incidence between 1 per 1600 and 1 per 2660 live births. Relative higher incidence in the neonatal period compared to later childhood is favored by the hypercoagulability state of the mother, mechanical stress during delivery, transient right to left intracardiac shunt, high hematocrit, blood viscosity, and risk of dehydration during t…
Gestational Alloimune Liver Disease—Case Report
We describe the case of a newborn with the antenatal onset of hepatic failure, which has been investigated for all etiologies that can cause liver damage: infectious, metabolic, genetic, and immune. The lack of a clear answer regarding the etiology and the response to immunoglobulin therapy led us to the diagnosis of gestational alloimmune liver disease. Gestational alloimunne liver disease is an uncommon and very severe cause of neonatal acute l…
Neonatal Cerebral Sinovenous Thrombosis and the Main Perinatal Risk Factors—A Retrospective Unicentric Study
(1) Background: Neonatal cerebral sinovenous thrombosis (CSVT) is a rare disorder, associated with long-term neurological sequelae. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the most commonly encountered perinatal risk factors for this disease in a cohort of newborns from Romania. (2) Methods: The medical records of neonatal CSVT patients treated between January 2017 and December 2021 were descriptively assessed. (3) Results: The stud…
Waiting for (African) Cinema
Throughout his career, Cameroonian director Jean-Pierre Bekolo has been searching for cinema; notAfricancinema, just Cinema. In order to explain properly this claim, the essay will first consider Bekolo's work within the context of the ever-ongoing conversation regarding the framing and aesthetics of African and Third Cinemas. Second, for a closer perspective on what will be termed "neurotic cinema," the essay will key on Bekolo's latest effort,N…
Truth or Dare
From visual place to aural space
Mahamat-Saleh Haroun has become an increasingly relevant directorial voice in African and international cinema. His films deal with various themes, such as family (especially the loss of a parent), civil war, and social inequality, mostly set up against the socio-political backdrop of Chad. Haroun's camera records and observes the country as a visual place, at the intersecting narrative point of fiction and documentary. As such, the director visu…
Sonic Space in Djibril Diop Mambety's Films
The art of Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambety's cinema lies in the tension created between the visual narrative and the aural narrative. His work has been considered hugely influential, and his films bridge Western practices of filmmaking and oral traditions from West Africa. Mambety's film Touki Bouki is considered one of the foundational works of African cinema. Vlad Dima proposes a new reading of Mambety's entire filmography from the per…
Literary cinema? 2 or 3 things I Know about Anne Hébert’s Le Premier jardin
This essay explores the narrative connections between Jean-Luc Godard's cinema (mostly represented by 2 ou 3 choses que je sais d’elle, 1967) and Anne Hébert's complex novel, Le Premier jardin (Éditions du Boréal, 1988), and establishes that the style of the latter is inextricably linked to the cinematic techniques of the former. These connections transform Hébert's writing into a surrogate visual narrative. Literary and visual narratives overlap…
This article explores Ousmane Sembene's short story La Noire de... (Black Girl) and its film version by using the poster for the film as the linking cog, and by analysing the various shapes melancholia takes across these mediums. Sembene's interior sets are often ornamented with posters that have a double meaning: what they signify within the space of the film, and what they mean within the larger social context of Senegal and West Africa in gene…
A Fantasy of One's Own
This essay explores connections between Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo and Charles Baudelaire's prose texts. The main character of the film and the narrator of the prose texts are both confined emotionally in their own dreams and fantasies, but also physically, in a multitude of restricting, prison-like rooms that mirror the dynamic of the unconscious
