  • Cross‐species amplification, non‐invasive genotyping, and non‐Mendelian inheritance of human STRPs in Savannah baboons

    Open Access•Kimbra Smith, K L Smith et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2000

Twenty-nine human microsatellite primer pairs were screened for their utility in the cross-species amplification of baboon DNA derived from both blood and feces as part of a larger study to identify paternal half sisters in a population of wild baboons (Papio cynocephalus). Forty-one percent (12/29) of the human primers successfully amplified baboon DNA. Of these 12 primers, six amplified fragments that were both polymorphic and heterozygous (mea…

  • Genetic variability in the major histocompatibility complex

    Open Access•Susan C Albert, Susan C Alberts et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1993

The extraordinary genetic polymorphism observed in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of the vertebrate genome has attracted the attention of researchers for decades. In almost all taxa that have been investigated, levels of polymorphism are remarkably high. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the maintenance of genetic diversity at the MHC, including pathogen-driven natural selection, selection driven by maternal-fetal inter…

  • High‐resolution two‐dimensional electrophoretic survey of serum protein genetic types in Schmiedeleut Hutterites

Open Access•Harold H Harrison, Carole Ober et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1991

High‐resolution, two‐dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) was used to examine allele frequencies in eight serum protein marker systems and to screen for rare or previously undescribed alleles in 152 members of the Schmiedeleut branch of the Hutterite Brethren. The results include the first report of α 2 ‐HS glycoprotein, apolipoprotein E, and SPPM‐158 frequencies and haptoglobin 1F and 2S subtype frequencies in the Hutterites. Designed as part of on…

  • Demographic components of gene frequency change in free‐ranging macaques on Cayo Santiago

    Open Access•Carole Ober, THOMAS J OLIVIER et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1984•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 26

Gene frequency profiles from January 1973 to January 1977 for three polymorphic loci were examined in Cayo Santiago rhesus social groups. The effects of demographic components (i.e., births, deaths, immigrations, emigrations, and group fission and fusion) on total change in gene frequencies are assessed. Allelic frequencies at the carbonic anhydrase II, 6‐phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, and transferrin loci were analyzed in four social groups. In…

  • Genetic aspects of migration in a rhesus monkey population

  • Carbonic anhydrase heterozygosity and F ST distributions in Kenyan baboon troops

    Open Access•Carole Ober, THOMAS J OLIVIER et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1978•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 16

An analysis of the distribution of carbonic anhydrase alleles in troops of olive baboons, Papio cynocephalus , is reported. In an earlier study (Olivier, T. J., J. Buettner‐Janusch and V. Buettner‐Janusch, 1974, Am. J. Phys. Anthrop., 41 : 175–190) the authors found a significant excess of heterozygotes with a large amount of intertroop differentiation at the CA II locus. If balancing selection is acting on the CA II locus and maintaining an exce…
