There is on-going global debate and policy-setting concerning researchers' obligations to meet the health needs of people participating in HIV prevention trials in resource-poor settings. The use of visual analogue scales to assess motivation to eat in human subjects
This present paper reviews the reliability and validity of visual analogue scales (VAS) in terms of (1) their ability to predict feeding behaviour, (2) their sensitivity to experimental manipulations, and (3) their reproducibility. VAS correlate with, but do not reliably predict, energy intake to the extent that they could be used as a proxy of energy intake. Historians are increasingly aware of the extent to which notions of the female consumer were commercially orchestrated in interwar Britain. Popular women's magazines of the period were at the centre of this process, redefining pre-1914 notions of femininity in the context of the socio-economic realities of interwar Britain. Universal radiographic screening for tuberculosis among inmates upon admission to jail
OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the efficacy of radiographic screening for tuberculosis in correctional facilities. METHODS: Inmates at an admission facility in New York, NY, were screened for tuberculosis by registry cross-match, symptom interviews, tuberculin testing, and chest radiography. RESULTS: Thirty-two cases of tuberculosis were detected among 4172 inmate admissions (767 cases per 100,000). Twenty-five inmates (78%) were previously dia…
Tooth size and the Carabelli trait
The Carabelli trait and its association with maxillary molar crown base and cusp size was studied in a group of 128 Kwengo, a San‐Negro hybrid community living in Western Caprivi, Namibia. The trait was classified according to a modification of the scheme put forward by Dahlberg and by Scott (In: Dental Anthropology. New York: Pergamon, 1963) (Hum. Biol. 52:63–78, 1980).
