  • Chemical and mineralogical analysis of tenax used as a metalworking auxiliary material in artefacts from the early Avar-period cemetery of Makó–Mikócsa-halom

Sándor Gulyá, Csılla Balogh et al.•ARTICLE•Archeometriai Műhely•2026

In this study, we present the composition of tenax used as an adhesive and as a reinforcing or filling material, identified on two unique artefacts recovered from the Early Avar-period cemetery of Makó–Mikócsa-halom: a circular pendant forming part of a necklace and a belt mount. Based on our findings the main organic component was wax, similarly that recorded in the literature. The inorganic phase was somewhat different coming from sand (quartz,…

After its destruction, the memorial place was covered with demolished material and soil. This significant site was re-identified and excavated during the archaeologica…

  • Reconstructing the Paleoenvironmental Evolution of Lake Kolon (Hungary) through Integrated Geochemical and Sedimentological Analyses of Quaternary Sediments

Open Access•Tamás Zsolt Vári, Sándor Gulyá et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2023

Lake Kolon (Hungary), situated in the middle of the Turjánvidék area between the saline lakes of the Danube valley and the Homokhátság, is one of the most significant natural aquatic habitats in the Danube–Tisza Interfluve region. The central question of this study is how the lake changed, and how environmental factors and human activities have influenced these paleoenvironmental changes in Lake Kolon. A multiproxy analysis of a core sequence (lo…

  • Late Pleistocene to Holocene Palaeohydrological History of the Thermal-Spring-Fed Lake Pețea (NW Romania) Revealed by Radiocarbon Dating and Complex Sedimentological Investigations

Open Access•Sándor Gulyá, Sándor Gulyás et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2023

Understanding sedimentation processes in response to past hydrogeological and climatic changes and capturing millennial-scale variations is a key focus of lacustrine paleoenvironmental research. This study presents the first high-resolution chronology and sedimentary data for the small thermal-spring-fed Lake Pețea, NW Romania, and unravels the evolutionary history of the lake harboring a unique endemic fauna. Its small size and single source of …

  • Comparison of High-Resolution 14C and Luminescence-Based Chronologies of the MIS 2 Madaras Loess/Paleosol Sequence, Hungary

Open Access•Pál Sümegi, Dávid Molnár et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2022

Numerous loess/paleosol sequences (LPS) in the Carpathian Basin span the period of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 2 and the last glacial maximum (LGM). Nevertheless, only two known records—Madaras and Dunaszekcső—preserve highly resolved records with absolute chronologies with minimal uncertainties, which enable the meaningful assessment of feedbacks and short-term climatic fluctuations over this period. The Madaras profile is located at the northern…

  • Tackling erosion-accumulation events in a moat sequence from a unique Ottoman memorial place (Szigetvár, SW Hungary) using 14C and geoarcheological data

    Open Access•Sándor Gulyá, Andrea Torma et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 20

One of the most influential rulers of the sixteenth century, Sultan Suleyman I, passed away and was buried temporarily near the fortress of Szigetvár in SW Hungary in 1566. Later, a memorial place was erected on the site in the second half of the sixteenth century. The complex was surrounded by a palisade system and a moat on its northern side. The site was fully destroyed in 1692, and the exact location vanished with time. Recent investigations …

  • A palaeoenvironmental record of the Southern Hemisphere last glacial maximum from the Mount Cass loess section, North Canterbury, Aotearoa/New Zealand

    Open Access•Peter C Almond, Sándor Gulyá et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2021

Calcareous loess in North Canterbury, eastern South Island, New Zealand (NZ), preserves subfossil bird bone, terrestrial gastropods, and eggshell, whose abundances and radiocarbon ages allowed us to reconstruct aspects of palaeoenvironment at high resolution through 25 to 21 cal ka BP. This interval includes millennial-scale climatic variability during the extended last glacial maximum (30–18 ka) of Australasia. Our loess palaeoclimatic record sh…

  • Intensified mid-Holocene floods recorded by archeomalacological data and resilience of first farming groups of the Carpathian Basin

    Open Access•Sándor Gulyá, Balázs Nagy et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 84

One of the most significant cultural transformations in European prehistory occurred in the middle of the 6th millennium BC in the heart of the Carpathian Basin. The northward expansion of Mediterranean farming groups (Starčevo-Körös-Criş cultural complex) halted and underwent a complete transformation giving rise to a new cultural group carrying an altered form of Neolithic traditions onward to Europe. This transformation is restricted to sites …
