  • Historical geographies in Hungary (2021–2025)

    Open Access•Norbert Pap•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Geography•2026

The paper examines contemporary Hungarian ‘történeti földrajz’ (historical geography) as a post-socialist and intellectually weighted field of research. Based on a publication corpus of 322 items produced between 2021 and 2025 and a questionnaire survey of active researchers, Hungarian historical geography appears as a small, predominantly Hungarian-language and Carpathian Basin-centred field. Its main thematic clusters include landscape and land…

  • Propaganda and Heritage in Hungary

    Open Access•Norbert Pap, Máté Kitanics•ARTICLE•Heritage & Society•2026•Referencias: 22

This paper examines the politicization of archaeological research conducted at the site of the Battle of Mohács (1526) during the Kádár era (1956–1989) in Hungary, focusing on József Szűcs, a worker of peasant origin who was mythologized as a “proletarian hero.” Combining discourse analysis and social archaeology, we show how state ideology shaped historical interpretation by presenting Szűcs as the discoverer of the mass graves, even though the …

Open Access•Norbert Pap, Pál Fodor et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•Referencias: 4

The 1526 Battle of Mohács represents a pivotal moment in Central European history with lasting implications for collective memory. Five mass graves at Sátorhely memorial site are undergoing renewed investigation before the battle’s 500th anniversary. This multidisciplinary study analyzes historical sources, geoinformatics reconstructions, and recent archaeological findings to examine burial identities. Evidence suggests the graves contain multiet…

  • Shahids and martyrs

Open Access•Péter Reményi, Nurcan Özgür Baklacıoğlu et al.•ARTICLE•Hungarian Geographical Bulletin•2024

Kosovo Field (Kosovo Polje), the core region of the newly independent Kosovo, experienced several key historical events, each of which left important memories in the space. As political control over territory changed, different memories connected to the area became stronger, while others were pushed into the background. The first battle of Kosovo (1389) and the death of their ruler Lazar, is a key event in Serbian history, identified through spec…

  • Remembrance of the Ottoman Occupation

Norbert Pap, Péter Reményi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Muslims in Europe•2022•Referencias: 3

Buildings of the burial complex of Suleiman the Magnificent were excavated between 2015–2019 in Szigetvár. This paper investigates why, despite the traditional anti-Muslim sentiments in the local community, the FIDESZ-KDNP failed to turn the Suleiman story into local political success after the 2015 migration crisis, during a period of extensive anti-Muslim campaigning. This analyses focuses on the opportunities, challenges and concerns of the cr…

  • Tackling erosion-accumulation events in a moat sequence from a unique Ottoman memorial place (Szigetvár, SW Hungary) using 14C and geoarcheological data

    Open Access•Sándor Gulyá, Andrea Torma et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 20

One of the most influential rulers of the sixteenth century, Sultan Suleyman I, passed away and was buried temporarily near the fortress of Szigetvár in SW Hungary in 1566. Later, a memorial place was erected on the site in the second half of the sixteenth century. The complex was surrounded by a palisade system and a moat on its northern side. The site was fully destroyed in 1692, and the exact location vanished with time. Recent investigations …

  • The changing room for manoeuvre of ‘Visegrad’ Hungary in the Western Balkans. An extraordinary change in Hungarian-Serbian relations

Open Access•Péter Reményi, Tibor Pap et al.•ARTICLE•Politics in Central Europe•2021

Hungarian-Serbian relations have never been as cordial as they are now, and this is an opinion shared by the leadership of both countries in spite of the modern history of the two nations. In our paper, we seek explanation for this change and argue that it is a consequence of multiple factors: First, the geopolitical changes in the Western Balkans, which have resulted in a great power competition that has opened up space for small states, like Hu…

  • Research on the Türbe Complex of Suleiman the Magnificent in Szigetvár and its Fortification

    Open Access•Norbert Pap•ARTICLE•Osmanli Arastirmalari - Journal…•2020

Researchers have been searching for the türbe (tomb) of Suleiman the Magnificent in Szigetvár, Hungary for over 110 years. Although scholars from a variety of disciplines have published numerous works on the subject, their meth- odologies have been limited to those established before 2013. In the last several years, newer multidisciplinary examinations have been conducted and as a result, the former examination sites (i.e., locations along the Al…

  • Hungary’s Turn to the East

Norbert Pap, Viktor Glied•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•2018•Citada por: 5

Jobbik, the Movement for a Better Hungary, is a new generation, radical right-wing political party. In many ways it is similar to other far-right groups in Europe, although it has several unique characteristics. It is a strange anomaly that the party, alone among radical parties in Europe, has pursued a Muslim-friendly policy. Is it an adequate explanation that this anti-Semitic and anti-Israel party considers Muslims its natural allies? Is this …

  • The Hungarian Border Barrier and Islam

Norbert Pap, Viktor Glied•ARTICLE•Journal of Muslims in Europe•2017•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 1

The co-existence between Hungarians and Islam has been considered balanced, until the spring of 2015 when a wave of migrants appeared in Europe. “Opening to the East”, the foreign policy announced by the government in 2011 heralded a new chapter of cooperation with Arabic/Muslim countries, predominantly due to economic considerations. The migrant crisis turned government communication, as well as the stance of Jobbik, the largest opposition party…

  • Magyarország és Dél-Európa

    Open Access•Norbert Pap•ARTICLE•Tér és Társadalom•2007

Dél-Európa a magyar tudományos gondolkodásban, azon belül a geográfiában is alulreprezentáltan jelenik meg. Vizsgálatunk során áttekintettük a magyar földrajzi kutatás és publikálás tematikájában a dél-európai elemeket, a kitüntetett problémákat és a területhez való viszonyulás jellegét. Összegeztük az utóbbi évek mental map-es vizsgálatainak releváns eredményeit. .Áttekintettük az egyes dél-európai államokkal kialakított magyar bilaterális kapcs…

  • A kistérségek helye, szerepe Magyarországon a 21. század első évtizedében

A másik alapkérdés a nevezéktaninak tűnő vita a tartalmi kérdések manipulációjáról. Igen kevéssé feltárt a kistérségek eltérő, sajátos fejlődését bemutató kis…
