Who Lies in the Five Mass Graves of the 1526 Battle of Mohács
The 1526 Battle of Mohács represents a pivotal moment in Central European history with lasting implications for collective memory. Five mass graves at Sátorhely memorial site are undergoing renewed investigation before the battle’s 500th anniversary. This multidisciplinary study analyzes historical sources, geoinformatics reconstructions, and recent archaeological findings to examine burial identities. Evidence suggests the graves contain multiet…
The Budapest Imam
In the early years of the 20th century, Bosnia assumed an increasingly important place in Hungary’s plans for great-power status. The aim of the Hungar- ian government was to connect the province to the Austro-Hungarian Empire by virtue of the ancient right of the Hungarian crown, thereby bringing Bosnia into the Hungarian economic sphere of interest and gradually under the control of the Hun- garian state. As part of this strategy, the authoriti…
Tackling erosion-accumulation events in a moat sequence from a unique Ottoman memorial place (Szigetvár, SW Hungary) using 14C and geoarcheological data
One of the most influential rulers of the sixteenth century, Sultan Suleyman I, passed away and was buried temporarily near the fortress of Szigetvár in SW Hungary in 1566. Later, a memorial place was erected on the site in the second half of the sixteenth century. The complex was surrounded by a palisade system and a moat on its northern side. The site was fully destroyed in 1692, and the exact location vanished with time. Recent investigations …

The Business of State
Based on original Ottoman sources, the author traces the transformation of the financial and administrative system of the Ottoman Empire at the turn of the 17th century. The changes were made necessary by the burgeoning budget deficit, a consequence of overspending by the oversized Ottoman state. The author proves that the phenomena previously thought to be signs of decline were in fact aspects of a well-considered reform program, dismantling ste…

Ottoman warfare, 1300–1453
The formative period, c .1300–1370s The early Ottoman military organisation was a peculiar a malgam of Turkoman nomadic, Seljuk-Ilkhanid and Byzantine elements, but it was the nomadic tradition which predominated among the various constituent parts in the early period of the formation of the state. As in other Eurasian nomadic societies, it may well have been very difficult to distinguish between society and military among the Turkomans living in…
Fur of Lynx and Arable Land
At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries the tax farmer (multezim) was prob ably one of the most hated figures in the Ottoman empire. Tax farmers were used in the collection of the state revenues as early as in the 15th century, but their role gained momentum particularly from the second half of the 16th century. This was due to four major developments: 1. the slow but steady growth of the imperial domains (has) of the sultans; 2. the granting …
Ransom Slavery along the Ottoman Borders
Notwithstanding the spectacular upswing in the research, there are areas of Ottoman slavery that have still not received the attention they deserve. This volume intends to take a step towards bridging this gap. The twelve studies it contains are organised around connected themes: the hunt for, the trade in and the treatment of captives in the Balkans and in Central Europe. The area under scrutiny is focussed on Hungary, and some other border regi…

Who should obtain the castle of Pankota (1565)
Piracy, Ransom Slavery and Trade
The study of slavery has grown strongly in recent years, as scholars working in several disciplines have cultivated broader perspectives on enslavement in a wide variety of contexts and settings. Critical Readings on Global Slavery offers students and researchers a rich collection of previously published works by some of the most preeminent scholars in the field. With contributions covering various regions and time periods, this anthology encoura…
