  • Historicizing and authenticating African dress

    Benét Deberry-Spence, Benét Deberry‐spence et al.•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2021

This research examines consumer authentication in the context of African Americans’ consumption practices and discourses of African dress. Through multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork, our work reveals historical and ideological aspects of authentication. We identify three authentication practices, namely, representing resistance, educating one’s own, and journeying to the motherland. Our data reveal the importance of double consciousness and histo…

  • Ebayization

Open Access•Vladimir Madik, Aaron C Ahuvia et al.•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2016

eBayization is an alternative theoretical lens to George Ritzer's McDonaldization thesis to describe the economic practices and consumer trends in today's information‐driven, postindustrial societies. While the McDonaldization thesis holds that many aspects of American society have become increasingly structured around principles of efficiency , calculability , predictability , and control that make society resemble a McDonald's restaurant, and l…

  • Mosque-Based Emotional Support Among Young Muslim Americans

Despite a growing literature on social support networks in religious settings (i.e., church-based social support), little is known about mosque-based support among Muslims. This study investigates the demographic and religious behavior correlates of mosque-based social support among a multi-racial and ethnic sample of 231 young Muslims from southeast Michigan. Several dimensions of mosque-based support are examined including receiving emotional s…

  • Infidel Brands

    Elif Izberk-Bilgin•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2012•Citada por: 32

Religion and ideology are prominent forces shaping consumption. While consumer researchers have studied both topics considerably, examinations of religious ideology remain scant. Notably lacking is research on how religion, myths, and ideology intertwine in the marketplace, informing attitudes toward brands. This ethnography investigates how the religious ideology of Islamism informs brand meanings among low-income Turkish consumers and identifie…

  • Limits of the McDonaldization thesis

    Aaron Ahuvia, Elif Izberk-Bilgin•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2011•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 37

Ritzer's McDonaldization thesis holds that McDonald's, with its efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control, is a good model for the forces of modern capitalism that structure both production and consumption. This article argues that while McDonaldization represents a particular collection of forces, there also exists a rising countertrend in post-industrial societies that we call eBayization. Whereas McDonaldization produces homogenei…

  • An interdisciplinary review of resistance to consumption, some marketing interpretations, and future research suggestions

    Elif Izberk-Bilgin, Elif Izberk‐Bilgin•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2010•Citada por: 33•Referencias: 13

This article provides an interdisciplinary review of consumer resistance, an overarching term that includes various forms of anti‐consumerist behaviour. The review draws from disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, political economy, and cultural studies to explore the historical and discursive constructions of resistance and other key marketing concepts. In so doing, it identifies two distinct paradigms in the social sciences and humanities…
