Women and the coloniality of urban atmospheres of terror in Rio de Janeiro's favelas
This essay examines the urban atmospheres of terror in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from the perspective of women residents. Drawing on two ethnographic projects conducted in various favelas in 2016 and 2019, I argue that terror, as an urban atmosphere, is deeply rooted in a long history of racialized and gendered violence, and that its persistence in the contemporary urban landscape is a consequence of the coloniality of power. In this article, I examine the definition of resistance given by a favela woman from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil-Lucia Cabral-and its epistemological potential for urban theory. From a feminist, postcolonial and decolonial point of view, I argue that Lucia's definition of resistance entails an insightful framework to understand urban transformations, because she shifts the question of 'what they are' to 'where they stream from'. Le renouvellement de l’approche féministe des Centres d’aide et de lutte contre les agressions à caractère sexuel face à la nécessité intersectionnelle
Depuis plus d’une décennie, les Centres d’aide et de lutte contre les agressions à caractère sexuel (CALACS) se sont investis dans l’adoption d’une approche intersectionnelle, celle-ci faisant écho à une nécessité émanant de leurs pratiques quotidiennes.
