  • Bayesian chronological models of the Nerja Cave (Málaga, Spain)

    Open Access•Vanessa Extrem-Membrado, J Emili Aura Tortosa et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026•Referencias: 44

The Nerja Cave is a key archaeological site in the Southern Iberian Peninsula. It was inhabited by humans from the Upper Palaeolithic until recent Prehistory (30 and 3.7 ka cal BP). Various excavation campaigns performed in its external chambers (Vestíbulo, Mina and Torca) have recovered evidence of its use as habitat and burial site. Multiple studies on these matters have been published, but, until now, no Bayesian chronological modeling that ut…

  • Radiocarbon Dates for the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene Occupations of Cova Rosa (Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain)

    Open Access•Esteban Álvarez-Fernández, Jesús F Jordá Pardo et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2021•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 17

Four excavations have been performed at the archaeological site of Cova Rosa (Asturias, Cantabrian Spain): three of them in the second half of last century and the other in this decade. Although little of the archaeological material found in those excavations has been published, here we attempt the stratigraphic correlation of sections revealed by the different excavations and we present 22 new radiocarbon dates for bones and marine shells, built…

  • New archaeological data on the upper Paleolithic site of cueva de Malalmuerzo (Moclín, Granada, Spain)

    Open Access•Lidia Cabello, Pedro Cantalejo-Duarte et al.•ARTICLE•Munibe Antropologia-Arkeologia•2020

The Malalmuerzo cave (Moclín, Granada, Spain) has been known since the 1980s for its archaeological remains and rock art, dated to the Neolithic and the Solutrean periods respectively. However, following thirty years of neglect, our team carried out a brief archaeological intervention after looters destroyed parts of the sediment fill of the cave. The refreshing of disturbed surfaces and the examination of a small undisturbed profile produced man…

  • Selection and Exploitation of Macro‐Vertebrate Resources During the Upper Palaeolithic in Northern Spain. New Evidence from Coímbre Cave (Peñamellera Alta, Asturias)

Open Access•J Yravedra, David Álvarez-Alonso et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2017

The exploitation of ungulates in the Cantabrian region during the Upper Palaeolithic is characterized by the appearance of progressively specialized hunting strategies, especially during the Magdalenian. This specialization focused on either Iberian ibex or red deer, depending on environmental or topographic features. Red deer, for instance, was hunted mostly on the plains while ibex and/or chamois was hunted in rocky and mountainous areas. Here …

Open Access•Juana Molina Salido, Jesús F Jordá Pardo et al.•ARTICLE•Virtual Archaeology Review•2016

With the firm conviction that current archaeology needs to use all the tools that computer science provides, we have developed a project for digitising and structuring all the information gathered from the different excavation campaigns carried out in San Chuis hillfort (Allande, Asturias, Spain). In order to do it, we have developed the Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) of the hillfort, in order to proceed subsequently to its virtualization. To …

  • The Iron Age in West Central Africa

Open Access•Manuel Sánchez-Elipe Lorente, Alfredo González Ruibal et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of African History•2016•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 17

Over the last few decades the number of radiocarbon dates available for West Central Africa has increased substantially, even though it is still meagre compared with other areas of the continent. In order to contribute to a better understanding of the Iron Age of this area we present and analyze a total of 22 radiocarbon dates obtained from sites from the island of Corisco (Equatorial Guinea). By comparing them with those from Equatorial Guinea, …

  • Late Neanderthals at Jarama VI (central Iberia)?

Open Access•Martin Kehl, Christoph Burow et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

Previous geochronological and archaeological studies on the rock shelter Jarama VI suggested a late survival of Neanderthals in central Iberia and the presence of lithic assemblages of Early Upper Paleolithic affinity. New data on granulometry, mineralogical composition, geochemical fingerprints and micromorphology of the sequence corroborate the previous notion that the archaeological units JVI.2.1 to JVI.2.3 are slackwater deposits of superfloo…

  • Radiocarbon dating casts doubt on the late chronology of the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition in southern Iberia

Open Access•Rachel E Wood, Rachel Wood et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2013

It is commonly accepted that some of the latest dates for Neanderthal fossils and Mousterian industries are found south of the Ebro valley in Iberia at ca. 36 ka calBP (calibrated radiocarbon date ranges). In contrast, to the north of the valley the Mousterian disappears shortly before the Proto-Aurignacian appears at ca. 42 ka calBP. The latter is most likely produced by anatomically modern humans. However, two-thirds of dates from the south are…

  • Solutrenses Del Sur De Iberia en Transición

Open Access•J Emili Aura Tortosa, Jesús F Jordá Pardo et al.•ARTICLE•Espacio Tiempo y Forma Serie I…•2013
