Women's Career Aspirations and Achievements
This report describes the educational, occupational, and familial behavior a panel of sixty-four women exhibited during the first seven yearsfollowing their college gradua tion. Their career patterns are compared with the aspirations they held as seniors in college. The findings reveal high consistency between senior aspirations and actual behavior on some items, e.g., mariage and graduate school, but less consistency on others, including occupat…

Intensive study over four years of one class in the women's college of a private coeducational university yields varied types of adult aspirations. Since all the women aspire to family life, career aspirations are defined as the desire to pursue one's chosen occupation in addition to familial roles. Five role constellation categories based on marital, familial and work status of college alumnae were compared on leisure activity scores and participation in specific leisure areas. An interview study of 50 freshman women indicates that the girls were not sophisticated about birth control knowledge and that this aspect of sexual behavior was not of central concern to them. 85% had discussed birth control either in high school or college with someone mostly girl friends. 90% could name 3 or more methods of birth control; most were familiar with oral contraceptives. Use of contraception seems low among their acquaintances and …
