A Protocol to Identify the Wear Traces on Osseous Points Used for Fishing
The ability to distinguish osseous points used for hunting in aquatic and terrestrial environments is key to understanding the economies of hunter–gatherer societies (and beyond) and the typological diversity of such tools observed worldwide. In this article, we present an analytical protocol for wear analysis that enables the identification and correct interpretation of microwear traces generated on osseous points as a result of fishing. A start…
Neolithic Fishing Stations at Šventoji, Southeastern Baltic
Several examples of de-Neolithisation have been identified in the Eastern Baltic region, where communities of Neolithic cultures—particularly in areas rich in aquatic resources—shifted from animal husbandry to fishing, or at least significantly supplemented their subsistence with freshwater resources. One such case is Šventoji in Lithuania, on the southeastern Baltic coast, primarily known for its numerous waterlogged sites with excellent preserv…
Stable isotope measurements reveal diverse agricultural management strategies in the Roman Iron Age (1–400 cal AD) southeast Baltic
This study presents a series of new radiocarbon dates and the first stable carbon and nitrogen isotope measurements of C 3 cereal grains from Roman Iron Age (1–400 AD) archaeobotanical assemblages in Lithuania, southeastern Baltic region. These data are complemented by stable isotope measurements of faunal remains to assess local environmental conditions and evaluate human impact on the landscape through agricultural practices. The δ 15 N and δ 1…

Use-wear studies of the function of prehistoric wooden products, is it really possible? The example of pestles from sites in Šventoji, Lithuania
The article presents the preliminary results of the traceological analysis of the collection of wooden pestles obtained during excavations of the complex of subneolithic sites in Šventoji in Lithuania. During the studies, an attempt was made to assess the possibility of interpreting the functions of the analysed tools based on the (probably) functional damage visible on them and to verify the hypotheses about the way they were used put forward by…

The Globular Amphora Culture in the Eastern Baltic
Until now, Šventoji in northwest Lithuania was considered the most northern site of the Neolithic Globular Amphora Culture (hereafter GAC ; ca. 3400–2500 cal BC ) in Europe. Recently, however, ceramics typologically resembling GAC ware were identified among the materials from the multi-period sites of Abora 1 and Iča in Latvia and further to the north from Tamula in southeast Estonia. Here we present the multi-disciplinary analyses of these ceram…
Towards a better understanding of the economy and culture of the Late Bronze Age in the southeastern Baltic
In 2020, rescue excavations due to construction of a pipeline connecting Poland and Lithuania took place at the Bronze Age sites Tarbiškės 1 and Tarbiškės 2, eastern Lithuania, both dated to 1050–900 cal BC. They revealed a rather homogeneous archaeological assemblage which fills a gap in the development of the Bronze Age culture and economy in the southeastern Baltic. Tarbiškės Ware, from a typological as well as chronological point of view, sta…
Hidden landscapes of the Earliest Iron Age
The article presents the data from Kakliniškės 7 settlement site, discovered and excavated in 2020 during the construction of the gas pipeline. The rich and representative collection of pottery and archaeobotanical material gathered in the site have provided valuable data on the hitherto unknown 4th century BC in Lithuania. Pottery such as that found at Kakliniškės 7 has not previously been identified, and is therefore referred to here as Kaklini…
The Origin of Late Roman Period–Post-Migration Period Lithuanian Horses
In this paper, we present the 87Sr/86Sr data of 13 samples from horses from six Lithuanian burial sites dating from the 3rd to the 7th C AD. Alongside these data, we also publish the bioavailable 87Sr/86Sr data of 15 Lithuanian archaeological sites, based on 41 animals which enabled the construction of a reliable baseline for the Southeast Baltic area. The 87Sr/86Sr values partially confirmed the hypothesis that the unusually large horses found i…
Light Production by Ceramic Using Hunter-Gatherer-Fishers of the Circum-Baltic
Artificial illumination is a fundamental human need. Burning wood and other materials usually in hearths and fireplaces extended daylight hours, whilst the use of flammable substances in torches offered light on the move. It is increasingly understood that pottery played a role in light production. In this study, we focus on ceramic oval bowls, made and used primarily by hunter-gatherer-fishers of the circum-Baltic over a c. 2000 year period begi…

The studied material was sampled from Lithuanian sites dating from the Late Mesolithic to the pre-Roman Iron Age. For the first time, we present δ 13 C and δ 15 N data from Lithuanian freshwater fi…
The transmission of pottery technology among prehistoric European hunter-gatherers
Human history has been shaped by global dispersals of technologies, although understanding of what enabled these processes is limited. Here, we explore the behavioural mechanisms that led to the emergence of pottery among hunter-gatherer communities in Europe during the mid-Holocene. Through radiocarbon dating, we propose this dispersal occurred at a far faster rate than previously thought. Chemical characterization of organic residues shows that…

The Story of One Harpoon. Reutilization of an Osseous Projectile From Subneolithic at Šventoji (Lithuania)
Among the rich collection of osseous artefacts found in the Subneolithic and Neolithic levels from archaeological sites in Šventoji (Lithuania), a small fragment of a bone harpoon head is particularly interesting. The characteristics of the use-wear traces that were identified on the artefact suggest that the piece was reused as a kind of grinding tool. This observation became a starting point for a discussion concerning the presence of such prac…
