Ethics in archaeobotany
This article presents the first systematic assessment of ethical concerns specific to archaeobotanical research, focusing on principles and values. Conducted by an international group of archaeobotanists, the study used an anonymous online survey to document experiences and perceptions within the archaeobotanical community with the aim of raising awareness, identifying prevalent good practices and noting points for improvement. The questionnaire …
Through the Lens
The paper represents a contribution to the understanding of crop displacement and biocultural identity during the processes of island colonization and the movement of people from one island to another. We present here the results of the interviews made during the investigations conducted between 2019 and 2020 on some of the small volcanic islands (each less than 70 km2) around Sicily. These islands are characterized by the cultivation of small la…
The Neolithic Site of Piano dei Cardoni in the Island of Ustica (Italy)
This paper presents the results of minero‐petrographic and chemical analyses of pottery and potential local raw materials from Ustica, a small volcanic island off the coast of Palermo (Sicily), inhabited during the Middle Neolithic. Typologically, the pottery shows cultural connections to the Bicromica and Serra d'Alto traditions, linking Ustica to Sicily and Southern Italy, as well as to the Late Neolithic Diana pottery from the Aeolian Archipel…
Recommendation for the Publication of DateBack

Adapting to Mediterranean island environments
This study investigates prehistoric human adaptation to small Mediterranean island environments through the archaeobotanical and zooarchaeological analysis of two key sites: Piano dei Cardoni (Ustica, Neolithic) and Mursia (Pantelleria, Bronze Age). Both volcanic islands, differing in size, landscape features, and chronology of occupation, offer an ideal framework to explore how early human communities managed limited insular resources, navigated…
The human entry in Sicily
The timing of the earliest peopling of Sicily and, to a wider level, of human mobility in the Mediterranean basin after the Last Glacial Maximum is enriched by the recent discovery of an archaeological record dated back to 16,5 ka cal BP from San Teodoro cave (Acquedolci, Messina). We present the results of a new archaeological campaign inside the grotto, where we were able to identify a layer related to the initial stage of human occupation. The…
Fair data in bioarchaeology - where are we at
Bioarchaeology, which encompasses the study of ancient DNA, osteoarchaeology, paleopathology, palaeoproteomics, stable isotopes, and zooarchaeology, is generating an ever-increasing volume of data as a result of advancements in molecular biology, technology, and publishing techniques. This data, derived from a finite amount of material, holds immense value in the analysis of our human ancestors' lives. To ensure the long-term reusability of this …
The Biad Standards
This article presents a series of recommendations for the publication of archaeological data, to improve their usability. These 12 recommendations were formulated by archaeological data experts who mined thousands of publications for different data types (including funerary practices, accelerator mass spectrometry dating, stable isotopes, zooarchaeology, archaeobotany and pathologies) during the initial construction of the Big Interdisciplinary A…

The Establishment of the Agricultural Landscape of Central Sicily Between the Middle Neolithic and the Beginning of the Iron Age
The possible co-variation of human occupation and vegetation from the Middle Neolithic to the beginning of the Iron Age (7.5-2.8 ka BP) in Central Sicily in the context of the central Mediterranean between Middle and Late Holocene are analysed in this paper to provide new insights on Sicilian prehistoric demography. The demographic and economic trends during these millennia were reconstructed using archaeological, Accelerator Mass Spectrometry 14…
The Neolithic settlement of Pyrgos‐Agia Marina
This paper is a preliminary presentation of the large settlement which has been just recently discovered at Pyrgos-Agia Marina, thanks to intensive field survey, geophysical prospections and HD documentation of the sections left behind by mechanical terracing for construction works. The discovery of the larger section and of the other remains indicates the presence of an early, long-lived, nucleated settlement on the west bank of the Pyrgos river…

Archaeobotany in an era of change and challenge
Apart from helping us understand past communities' response to climate change and their plant management resilience mechanisms, archaeobotanical information may also serve as a basis to rethink our economic system and implement new solutions to current challenges (e.g. re-adopt forgotten crops or implement circular economy models). Already fragile by nature, the integrity of archaeobotanical heritage is affected by current climate events, such as…
Obsidian from the Site of Piano dei Cardoni, Ustica (Palermo, Italy)
New investigations on Ustica (Palermo, Sicily) originated from the need to improve our knowledge of the island’s archaeological and environmental heritage. Through field surveys, particular attention was paid to human occupation in the Neolithic phases and focused on the less investigated southern side of the island. The systematic survey of the area of Piano dei Cardoni in 2018 brought to light a new Middle/Late Neolithic site, already partially…
The Sicilian Countryside in the Early Middle Ages
Within the project ‘Harvesting Memories: Ecology and Archaeology of Monti Sicani Landscapes’, this paper aims to reconstruct human–environment interactions in the inland areas of Western Sicily during the Early Middle Ages through a comparative analysis of environmental archaeological data. We analyse carpological and anthracological finds and faunal remains originating from different layers of the rural settlement of Contrada Castro (Corleone, P…
Archaeobotanical and Historical Insights on Some Steps of Forest Cover Disruption at Ustica Island (Sicily, Italy) from Prehistory Until Present day
This paper interprets the first archaeobotanical data to emerge from the island of Ustica (north-western Sicily, Italy). The excavation of the Neolithic site of Piano dei Cardoni (4600-4200 cal BC) and the Middle Bronze Age site of Faraglioni Village (1500-1250 cal BC), has made it possible to analyse plant macro-remains and compare them with data on local vegetation obtained from both historical literary sources and recent field surveys. The ons…
