Introduction. The investigation of Bashanta-I hillfort is at its initial stage nowadays. The site has witnessed only three exploration seasons (2010, 2015 and 2018). The utmost drought of 2018 made it possible to perform excavations in the estuary (liman) bed. Dig 4 and twelve shovel test pits revealed a 189 meter long wall base consisting of three to four layers of shelly limestone. The traceable part is approximately two thirds of the supposed …
Paleogenetic Studies of Migration Processes in Eurasia
Migration processes played a key role in shaping the cultural and genetic landscapes in Eurasia. Significant progress in the field of migration studies in recent years is associated with the development of methods for studying ancient DNA, making it possible to reach a new level of understanding the population-genetic aspects of ancient migrations and significantly supplementing the evidence of paleoanthropology and genetics of modern populations…
The impact of soil as a natural resource on emerging settlements in the steppes of Eurasia
The article explores the relationship between the development of settlements and their potentially accessible natural resources. Particular emphasis is placed on soil quality as the basis of agricultural practices. Key attention is paid to the study of the Kalmyk steppe between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea in the early Middle Ages, when the first urban settlements appeared in the region. As a comparative material, we used the results of a st…
Archaeological sites of residence – bronze age settlements in the Volga-Manych steppes
The relevance of the study of archaeological sites of residence – a Bronze Age settlement in the Volga-Manych steppes – lies in the fact that in Russian science the place of residence has not been studied and studies on them have been published in small quantities, in contrast to funerary monuments-barrows. The main reason for this “inattention” on the part of scientists lies in the small size of these settlements, which is why they are usually r…
Archaeological Burial Monuments of the Volga-Manych Steppe
Introduction. The work continues the Collection (Corpus) of archaeological monuments to have published data on sites excavated between 1929 and 1997 inclusive. Goals. The paper introduces further data on burial sites investigated from 1998 to 2009 in the Volga-Manych steppe, the latter largely matching the borders of Kalmykia. Materials and Methods. The review focuses on burial monuments only, and data on excavated habitats (settlements and hillf…

Introduction. In 2008 and 2015, two settlements of the Khazar era — referred to as Bashanta-I and Bashanta-II by the name of the locality respectively — were discovered. The joint archaeological expedition of Kalmyk Scientific Center (Russian Academy of Sciences) and Khalikov Institute of Archaeology (Tatarstan Academy of Sciences) headed by Dr. M. Ochir-Goryaeva is systematically exploring the monuments. The comprehensive research efforts involv…
Introduction. In the Republic of Kalmykia, agriculture is characterized by the prevalence of livestock breeding. Still, excessive grazing has resulted in land degradation. Materials. Analysis of buried soils from excavated kurgans reveals that the Late Bronze Age and Late Medieval Period witnessed extensive desertification processes across vast territories of Eastern European steppes. Those trends were determined by global climate aridization tra…
Introduction. Specialists dealing with the Pazyryk culture keep posing questions about its social structure. Traditionally, scholars ― with due account of outer parameters of kurgans, depths and areas of graves, numbers of buried horses, quantities and qualities of burial utensils ― have tended to identify three groups within the Pazyryk. Goals. The paper aims to analyze Pazyryk burial rites for social differences within the culture. Results. Whe…
Burial of the warrior-rider from Yashkul barrow group
Burials of the early Sarmatian period from the mound at the village Orekhovka in Stavropol Territory
Age and Status of the Woman in Nomadic Society
An Unusual Burial of a Xiongnu-Sarmatian Era Warrior in the Western Siberian Forest-Steppe
This article presents the results of a paleogenetic study of skeletal remains of a male from burial 688 at Sopka-2, in the Baraba forest-steppe. The artifacts, the burial rite, and the man’s Central Asian Mongoloid physical type unambiguously indicate a foreigner. We analyzed the uniparental markers, such as mitochondrial DNA (HVRI sequence and informative positions in the coding part of mtDNA) and Y-chromosome (allelic profile of 17 STR-loci). T…
Procession of Horsemen on a Gold Plaque from the Siberian Collection of Peter I
This article describes a group of horsemen depicted on a plaque decorating a rectangular gold casing from the Siberian collection of Peter I. Based on a drawing of the item, published in 1890, the number of characters, their postures and state are assessed. Four horsemen are evidently alive and three are dead. The absence of stirrups indicates the Scytho-Sarmatian age. Judging by the evidence relating to the transportation of the dead among the T…
The Peculiarities of the Geographical Distribution of the Pazyryk Kurgans
The article proposes a division of the Pazyryk culture sites from the steppe valleys of the mountain Altai according to landscape-and-geographical principle − along the Katun-Chuya ridge into west and east habitats. A review of basic sites within the limits of the two habitats revealed differences in their number, location and burial inventory, confirming the existence of the two habitats
Kinship Analysis of Human Remains from the Sargat Mounds, Baraba Forest-Steppe, Western Siberia
We present the results of a paleogenetic analysis of nine individuals from two Early Iron Age mounds in the Baraba forest -teppe, associated with the Sargat culture (fi ve from Pogorelka-2 mound 8, and four from Vengerovo-6 mound 1). Four systems of genetic markers were analyzed: mitochondrial DNA, the polymorphic part of the amelogenin gene, autosomal STR-loci, and those of the Y- chromosome. Complete or partial data, obtained for eight of the n…
A Genetic Analysis of Human Remains from the Bronze Age (2nd Millennium BC) Cemetery Bertek-56 in the Altai Mountains
Bone samples from two individuals (an adult and a child) buried at a Middle Bronze Age cemetery Bertek-56 on the Ukok Plateau, Altai, were subjected to a genetic analysis. The results are interpreted with reference to archaeological and craniometric data. Four systems of genetic markers were analyzed: mitochondrial DNA, the polymorphic part of amelogenin gene, autosomal STR-loci, and STR-loci of Y-chromosome. Complete information on these genetic…

The Scythian tombs
This paper details a new approach to the study of the Scythian burial mounds—the ‘planigraphy’ (or spatial analysis) of the mound and its burials, which follows two lines of enquiry that have so far been largely overlooked. Firstly, the statistics concerning the depth of all types of graves, such as primary and secondary burials, servants’ and horse graves, have been closely examined and compared because this parameter is an important mark of the…
An Analysis Of Mitochondrial Dna From The Pakhomovskaya Population Of The Late Bronze Age, Western Siberia
This article presents the results of an analysis of mitochondrial DNA extracted from bone samples from Stary Sad – a burial ground representing the eastern variant of the Late Bronze Age Pakhomovskaya culture in the Baraba forest-steppe, Western Siberia. Comparison with mitochondrial DNA data from earlier populations of the region and also with archaeological facts, points to the origins of the Pakhomovskaya people. Certain components of their ge…
Infant Burials in Dwellings at Chicha-1, in the Baraba Forest-Steppe
In the 9th – 7th cent. BC, during the transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age, a large fortifi ed settlement existed at Chicha, in the Baraba forest-steppe. New features of social organization are evidenced by burials of infants in dwellings. In this article, reasons behind the choice of infants buried are addressed. Results of sex chromosomes DNA analysis indicate that most infants buried in dwellings were boys. The presence of different …
