Implementation outcomes of 1-3-7 focus investigation for malaria in a low transmission setting in Southern Province, Zambia
Eleven countries have been certified as malaria free since 2016, but none of these are in subSaharan Africa where elimination challenges are unique. The 1-3-7 focus investigation approach is an implementation strategy that requires case reporting, case investigation/classification, and focal classification/response to be completed one, three, and seven days, respectively, after index case diagnosis. Real-time short-messaging-service reports are s…
A geo-enabled digital tool for microplanning and delivery of indoor residual spray in Zambia
Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is a vector control tool recommended by the WHO in areas of high malaria burden. Effective IRS implementation is complicated when up-to-date and accurate counts of structures eligible for IRS are unavailable; resultingly, programmatic spray coverage is typically calculated as the proportion of found structures that are sprayed. From 2016 – 2020 in Zambia, an open-source tool termed “Reveal,” was used to support digi…
How can we make postnatal information resources more accessible to women experiencing challenges accessing healthcare? Report of a co-production project
Working in a collaborative way requires time, flexibility and openness from everyone involved. It may feel unstructured or challenging at times, and produce unexpected findings, but this equitable way of working is respectful, develops valuable partnerships and authentic outputs
A disruptive cue improves handwashing in school children in Zambia
Behavioral economics hold great promise in changing patterns of behavior that influence human health. Handwashing with soap is one such behavior that is important in reducing exposure to pathogens, and in school-age children, handwashing helps reduce absenteeism through the prevention of respiratory and diarrheal diseases. However, the gap between knowledge on the importance of handwashing and actual handwashing practice, especially with soap, pe…
The Dynamics of Social Capital and Conflict Management in Multiple Resource Regimes
Sanginga, P. C., R. N. Kamugisha, and A. M. Martin. 2007. The dynamics of social capital and conflict management in multiple resource regimes: a case of the southwestern highlands of Uganda. Ecology and Society 12(1): 6. https://doi.org/10.5751/ES-01847-120106
Statistical quality control in archaeological survey
This paper proposes a statistical method to establish the quality of the results in archaeological survey. A random sample, a simple statistical operation and the use of standard tables, adapted to this kind of work, allow us to determine when the archaeological prospection has an acceptable quality or not. This kind of investigation has never been undertaken in archaeology, but it will be of the most suitable use in the future to know the reliab…
