Burden of mental health symptoms and access to needed mental health care among people with HIV in New England
People with HIV (PWH) are disproportionately impacted by mental health symptoms. HIV clinics strive to connect PWH with mental health services, but the effectiveness of these efforts is unknown. This project assessed the prevalence of mental health symptoms and barriers to related care among 133 PWH connected to two HIV clinics in New England. Participants were 49.8 years old on average, 38.3% White, 20.3% Hispanic/Latinx, and 67.7% male. Many pa…
Association Between HIV Risk and Health Care Access Among U.S. Adults in the South
In the United States (U.S.), the highest burden of new HIV diagnosis continues to occur in Southern states. Healthcare access among at-risk populations is crucial to mitigate HIV transmission, yet data on the association between HIV risk and healthcare access is limited. This study examined the association between HIV risk, (i.e., injecting any drug other than those prescribed, engaging in transactional sex, receiving treatment for a sexually tra…
Access and Utilization of HIV/STI Testing Services among Men Who have Sex with Men During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Trends in HIV Testing Among Adults in the Deep South
HIV testing is an entry point for both HIV prevention and treatment, and the CDC recommends that all adults of reproductive age undergo HIV testing at least once in their lifetime. However, HIV testing rates remain suboptimal. This study analyzed trends in HIV testing using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from 2017 to 2023 across nine Deep South states-Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Caroli…
Social, Structural, Behavioral, and Clinical Barriers Influencing Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Use Among Young Black Men Who Have Sex with Men in the South
A qualitative study evaluating Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy among individuals living in Mississippi
Background: COVID-19 vaccination rates are lower in the Southern United States compared to other regions. This study investigated COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy in Mississippi (MS) to identify preferences that may boost MS vaccination strategies in areas with poor vaccine uptake. Methods: Qualitative interviews were completed between April 2021 and January 2022 with staff and patients at four Federally Qualified Health Centers in MS. Interviews i…
“Make it more than a pill, make it an experience of health
Uptake and retention in clinical care for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is suboptimal, particularly among young African American men who have sex with men (MSM) in the Deep South. We conducted a two-phase study to develop and implement an intervention to increase PrEP persistence. In Phase I, we conducted focus groups with 27 young African American MSM taking PrEP at a community health center in Jackson, Mississippi to elicit recommendations fo…
Factors associated with suboptimal retention in HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis care among men who have sex with men
Despite the efficacy of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), retention in care in the United States remains suboptimal. The goal of this study was to explore factors that lead to suboptimal retention in PrEP care for men who have sex with men (MSM) in real-world clinical settings in the United States. Trained interviewers conducted semi-structured interviews with MSM (N = 49) from three clinics who had been engaged in PrEP care in the Midwest (n …
Development of an acceptance based PrEP intervention (ACTPrEP) to engage young black MSM in the South utilizing the Adaptome Model of intervention adaptation
Perspectives on long-acting formulations of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among men who have sex with men who are non-adherent to daily oral PrEP in the United States
Long-acting formulations of PrEP are acceptable to MSM with suboptimal PrEP persistence and have the potential to improve PrEP persistence. However, many felt they needed more information on safety, efficacy, and use to consider these options. As these long-acting formulations are implemented, public health campaigns and clinical interventions to encourage may maximize uptake particularly among those who are not currently adherent to daily oral P…

Locating the Risk
HIV incidence among African American (AA) young men who have sex with men (YMSM) has remained stable even though they made up the largest number of new HIV diagnoses among men who have sex with men (MSM) in 2017. HIV spreads at increased rates in dense sexual networks. Identifying the location of risk behaviors "activity spaces" could inform geographically circumscribed HIV prevention interventions. Utilizing the modified social ecological model …
Sex Workers and Syndemics
An Exploration of U.S. Southern Faith Leaders’ Perspectives of HIV Prevention, Sexuality, and Sexual Health Teachings
Reducing human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) racial/ethnic disparities in the Deep South has been a critical objective of the U.S. National HIV/AIDS Strategy. This finding, originally published in 2010 by the Office of National AIDS Policy, serves as a complement to the Health and Human Resources and Services Administration's Ending the HIV Epidemic (EtHE): A Plan for America. The EtHE plan, release…
Development of Telemedicine Infrastructure at an LGBTQ+ Clinic to Support HIV Prevention and Care in Response to Covid-19, Providence, RI
Institutional distrust among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men as a barrier to accessing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)
Populations at highest risk for acquiring HIV are more likely to pass through criminal justice (CJ) settings, and CJ-involved individuals are often at the intersection of multiple overlapping risk factors. The present study explored interest in, knowledge of, and barriers to PrEP uptake among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men involved in the criminal justice system. Using semi-structured interviews, 26 participants who identified…
Enhancing health among youth living with HIV using an iPhone game
BACKGROUND: Despite promising outcomes of antiretroviral therapy (ART), challenges to improving adherence among youth living with HIV (YLWH) exist. Mobile games are popular among youth and may improve skills related to resilience, coping, and ART adherence. This study examines the preliminary effects of an iPhone game/app on ART adherence, viral load, and relevant knowledge and attitudes among YLWH in Jackson, MS. METHODS: A RCT with 61 YLWH test…
Women’s decision-making about self-protection during sexual activity in the deep south of the USA
Many women continue to become infected with HIV, particularly in the Southeastern USA, despite widespread knowledge about methods to prevent its sexual transmission. This grounded theory investigation examined the decision-making process women use to guide their use or non-use of self-protective measures when engaging in sexual activity. Participants included women in the Mississippi cohort of the Women's Interagency HIV Study who were infected w…
Social, structural, behavioral and clinical factors influencing retention in Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) care in Mississippi
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a biomedical intervention that can reduce rates of HIV transmission when taken once daily by HIV-negative individuals. Little is understood about PrEP uptake and retention in care among the populations most heavily impacted by the HIV epidemic, particularly among young men who have sex with men (YMSM) in the Deep South. Therefore, this study explored the structural, social, behavioral, and clinical factors that …
Condom use and incarceration among STI clinic attendees in the Deep South
This study found a strong, independent relationship between condom use and multiple, long-term incarceration events among patients in an urban STI clinic in the Deep South. The results suggest that duration of incarceration and multiple incarcerations have significant effects on sexual risk behaviors, underscoring the deleterious impact of long prison or jail sentences on population health. Our findings also suggest that correctional health care …
Heterogeneity in the effect of public health insurance on catastrophic out-of-pocket health expenditures
Low- and middle-income countries increasingly provide broad-based public health coverage to their residents. One of the goals of such programmes is to reduce the extent to which beneficiaries incur catastrophic out-of-pocket expenditures on health care. A recent field experiment showed that on average Mexico's new public insurance programme reduced such expenditures in rural areas. Our reanalysis of that data, augmented with administrative data o…
