Intercultural friendship formation of Japanese university students
We examined which affinity-inducing factors Japanese university students (N = 46) consider important in intercultural friendship formation, and whether social anxiety and autistic tendencies shape their perceived importance of these factors and their agency in past intercultural friendships. This study investigated (1) whether children's songs could be potential sources of internal state information and (2) cross‐cultural/linguistic differences in the availability of such information. We coded for expressions of mental states and other internal states in 255 English songs, likely accessed by children in the United States, and 255 Japanese songs, likely accessed by Japanese children. The majority of the songs in both samples contained…
More than Meets the Eye
Based on a study of the sketch material held at the Paul Sacher Foundation, this paper examines the derivation of materials in the 1962 orchestral version of ‘Don’, the first movement of Pli selon pli: Portrait de Mallarmé by Pierre Boulez. Although the composer starts with a prepared serial multiplication table, he exhibits a flexible and imaginative treatment of material between conceptual planning, conceived initially in the relationship with …
Cross-Cultural Differences in the Valuing of Dominance by Young Children
Developmental research suggests that young children tend to value dominant individuals over subordinates. This research, however, has nearly exclusively been carried out in Western cultures, and cross-cultural research among adults has revealed cultural differences in the valuing of dominance. In particular, it seems that Japanese culture, relative to many Western cultures, values dominance less. We conducted two experiments to test whether this …
