The fall of Executive Power in Indonesia
This paper discusses interesting findings related to the weakening of executive power in Indonesia during the mid-term. The main finding is that the executive tends to choose to resign rather than face impeachment or an institutional vote of no confidence. In addition, Indonesian history records that constitutional crises have also led to changes in the structure of the state and government. Weaknesses in legal arrangements have contributed to th…
Islamic Revivalism
This study aims to fill the gap and explore how Islamic parties have attempted to legalize Islamic law in both countries over the past three decades. Most scholarly works on Islamic revivalism in Indonesia and Malaysia focus on it as a sociocultural phenomenon. However, there is a lack of scholarship investigating Islamic revivalism through a political approach. This article employs qualitative research methodology, drawing on academic books, jou…

Al-Sheikh Muḥammad al-Tāhir ibn ‘Āshūr, who lived between 1296 AH (1879 AD) and 1393 AH (1973 AD), is considered one of the eminent intellectuals of the modern era and an influential figure among the generation of writers and scholars. He is described as the pioneer of Maqasid thought in contemporary jurisprudence and has developed in this regard the book Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah al-Islāmiyyah (The Objectives of the Islamic Shariah), as well as his fa…

Origin of Islamophobia in Europe
The attack on the World Trade Center (WTC) in 2001 proved to be a turning point in the relationship between Islam and the West. Subsequently, the United States (US) invaded Iraq to avenge the tragedy. The US called its militaristic venture into the Middle East as an "act against terror." This invasion triggered a political crisis in the Middle Eastern countries. This situation was further aggravated by the Arab Spring, which occurred in the Middl…
The Indonesian-Hadramis’ Cooperation with the Ottoman and the Sending of Indonesian Students to Istanbul, 1880s-1910s
In the second half of the 19th century, especially since the 1880s, there was an intense relationship and cooperation between the Hadrami people in the Dutch East Indies (Colonial Indonesia) and the Ottoman government. This cooperation was driven especially by some wealthy Hadrami traders and the Ottoman consuls in Batavia. The Hadrami people in the Dutch East Indies who felt discriminated against by the colonial government then sought after eman…
Investing in the Ummatic Cause
‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Alawī al-’Aṭṭās (d. 1929) was born into a wealthy family and became a well-known Hadrami property-owner in Batavia (Jakarta). He lived in a dynamic era in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which witnessed the awakening of the Hadrami community in the Netherlands East Indies or colonial Indonesia. As a strong supporter of Islamic reformism, he was heavily involved in disseminating the idea of progress and sponsoring a number …
Education and Socio-political Change in the 11th and 12th Centuries Abbasid Realm
Education is an important instrument of change; though the process is usually very slow - very different from revolution - and its broad impact cannot easily and clearly observed. Good and balanced education will expectedly have a good impact on society, economy and politics; while, bad policy and culture of education will accordingly have the opposite effect. This article analyses the change in religious education in the Abbasid realm in the 11t…
The Emergence and Development of Indigenous Tea Plantations in West Java, 1875–1941
Indigenous people in Java in the colonial era were often portrayed as a communal society, socially oriented and not in line with the market economy dominated by the Dutch administration. However, this over-simplifies the picture, especially with regard to the late colonial era, when a number of indigenous people voluntarily participated in the market economy, such as in the cultivation of export crops. This article examines the involvement of loc…
Nomadic and Sedentary Life in the Time of Prophet Muhammad
The Bedouins who live nomadically have existed for a long time in the desert region of Arabia. They existed before and during the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), when the cities in Arabia were still limited in number and level of population. They led a pastoralist life by herding livestock, especially camels. The Bedouins often appear in stories relating to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), usually anonymous, with their typical characters of…
