Photographic Evidence from Kuznetsk Neolithic Cemetery
The article presents the results of the study of six photographs from Kuznetsk Neolithic cemetery in 1940 deposited in Novokuznetsk Local History Museum. The authors attempted to define the specifics of inhumations in Kuznetsk Neolithic cemetery based on the available photographic sources. It has been shown that photographic evidence proved the common attributes of burials at this burial site: supine position of the deceased, hands on the pelvis,…
Sites with Stone Artifacts on the Kondoma-Kaltanchik Watershed Ridge (Kuznetsk Basin)
The study of Stone Age sites in the southern Kuznetsk Basin has been ongoing for over half a century. During this time, a significant number of new sites have been found, some of which have been excavated, and a system of concepts regarding the development of this area during the Stone Age has been established. In the 2010s and 2020s, a number of new Stone Age sites were found in the lower reaches of the Kondoma River, in the section near the vil…
The Lebedi Archaeological Micro-Region (Middle Inya River, Kuznetsk Basin)
This study is focused on enhancing the objectivity of the available cultural and chronological models for the areas with the pronounced landscape heterogeneity, using the Kuznetsk Basin as a case study. In this region, general trends in the ancient history of the Southwestern Siberia are combined with specific local features. The aim of this work is to identify a new archaeological micro-region (AMR) in the vicinity of the village of Lebedi and p…
New Evidence of the Early Bronze Age from the Kuznetsk Basin (Excavations at the Lebedi Settlement in 2025)
Current research problems in archaeology of the Early Bronze Age in the south of Western Siberia include establishing the southern boundaries of the Samus culture, extent of its population’s settlement in the Kuznetsk Basin, and relative chronology of the Samus and Krokhalevo cultures in the Upper Ob region. Research at the Lebedi settlement on the left bank of the Inya River in Promyshlenny District of Kemerovo Region opens up a promising perspe…
On the Problem of Identifying Archaeological Sites in the Middle Tom River Region
This article presents the results of historical, archival, and field archaeological research in the Middle Tom River region (Kemerovo Region) in 2025. The work justifies the principles of predictive modeling for locating archaeological heritage sites, and presents information about the new sites. Research methods involved analyzing archival evidence, surveying the area by means of aerial photography from a drone, and making test pits for determin…
Early Middle Ages Dwelling on the Pomortsevo-2 Settlement (Kuznetsk Hollow)
The article deals the results of the Pomortsevo-2 settlement excavations on the left bank part of the river Inya basin in the south-east of Kuznetsk hollow (the Belovo municipal district). One of the results of the field work is a dwelling with fragments of burnt construction containing 2 archaeologically complete Early Middle Ages vessels. A reconstruction of a dwelling was done which was a not deep pit of a rectangular shape with a light framed…
Stratigraphy of the Pisanaya-4 Settlement near the Tomskaya Pisanitsa Petroglyphic Site
This article discusses some problems in relative chronology of archaeological assemblages discovered at multilayered sites at the border of the Lower Tom and Middle Tom River regions, in their stratigraphic context. The research was aimed at establishing natural stratigraphy of the Pisanaya-4 site at its different sections, conducting archaeological attribution of the series of artifacts, identifying chronological and stratigraphical features of …

Artistic Metalwork Found Near the Tomskaya Pisanitsa
We describe rare toreutic items found in the 1970s, 1990s, and 2010s near the Tomskaya Pisanitsa rock art site—a zoomorphic fi gurine, two anthropomorphic masks, and an ornithomorphic pendant. Parallels among the ritual and funerary artifacts from Southern and Western Siberia are discussed. The fi gurine representing a horse or an onager resembles certain examples of ritual toreutic art of the Tagar and Kizhirovo cultures (500–300 BC). Anthropomo…
Avtodrom 2 – a Late Neolithic (Artyn Culture) Site in the Baraba Forest-Steppe, Western Siberia
New Absolute Dates for the Trans-Uralian and Western Siberian Neolithic
This article deals with the absolute chronology of the Neolithic cultures of the eastern Ural, Middle Irtysh-Baraba, and the Upper Ob basin. Twenty-two new radiocarbon dates for the ceramic assemblages of Trans-Uralian Neolithic and thirteen for those of the western Siberian forest-steppe suggest that Kozlov Mys, Poludenka, and Boborykino sites in the forest-steppe coexisted with those of the Makhandzhar type in eastern Ural and Kazakhstan during…
Avtodrom 2 – a Late Neolithic (Artyn Culture) Site in the Baraba Forest-Steppe, Western Siberia
The study addresses cultural and chronological attribution of Avtodrom 2 – the largest and best-known Neolithic site in the foreststeppe zone of Western Siberia. Over eight fi eld seasons (1998, 2004, 2007–2012), excavations focused on its northeastern part, where dwellings with Artyn type of pottery and numerous stone implements were found. We describe ceramics, lithics, habitation and utility structures, and propose to attribute them to the Lat…
The Dolgaya-1 Site and the Novoromanovo Rock Art Gallery
The Dolgaya-1 site and Novoromanovo rock art gallery in the Kemerovo Province, southern Siberia, may be jointly regarded as an unusual archaeological and petroglyphic complex dating to the Bronze Age. The proposed interpretation is based on the idea of a hunting feast in the context of the seasonal myth about a cosmic hunt. Late Ugrian and Evenkian reminiscences of this myth are discussed. The geographic location of Dolgaya-1 and Novoromanovo, sp…

The authors provide a general review of pseudotextile ceramics, which were widespread in the early 2nd millennium BC in the area spreading from the Tom River to the Tobol River. It is suggested that this cultural association of the Kuznetsk Basin is related to th…
