Stress assignment in Abkhaz verbs
This article tests theories of verb stress in the Northwest Caucasian language Abkhaz using a new database corpus of 3,115 inflected forms of 445 verbs. I describe the creation of the corpus and show how it can be used to gain new insights into principles of Abkhaz stress assignment, which depend on complex interactions between phonology and polysynthetic verbal morphology. Development of Tibetic verb paradigms
This paper examines two issues in the historical morphology of Tibetic verbs from the perspective of paradigm morphology. The first issue is why the historical future stem was lost after the Old Tibetan period, which we answer using the measure of paradigm conditional entropy. Cwyzhy Abkhaz
In this Illustration we describe the Cwyzhy (also Tswydzhy) dialect of Abkhaz, the native language of the third author. In Cwyzhy, the language Abkhaz is called /арhsаʃwа/ [ˈаphsæʃɥæ] аҧсашəа. Abkhaz (ISO-639-3 abk) belongs to the Northwest Caucasian family of languages, and the Abkhaz dialects are related as shown in (1) (adapted from Chirikba 2012: 36)
Creating boundaries and stops in German
This paper discusses the nature of prosodic representations, focusing on a case study from the phonology of Standard High German. This language displays devoicing, previously argued to be sensitive to syllables, and glottal stop epenthesis, previously argued to be sensitive to feet. Search & Copy (S&C) is a procedural model of vowel harmony in which underspecified vowels trigger searches for targets that provide them with features. In this paper, we seek to relate the S&C formalism with models of phonological locality proposed by recent work in the subregular program. The language game forms are analyzed in a rule-based implementation of Substance-Free Phonology.
