David Graeber’s anthropology and historical materialism
This article examines the one thread in David Graeber’s thought that unifies his approach to anthropological knowledge, global history, and political action: his faith in the revolutionary power of the ‘constituent imagination’. The concept refers to the human capacity to collectively imagine alternative forms of social life and bring them into being. Graeber treated it both as a key driver of history and the most viable means to overcome capital…
Rural merchants in the Early Modern Republic of Venice
This article innovatively analyses the economic structure of sixteenth century Venetian rural areas, specifically the countryside of the province of Vicenza. Many studies have proposed general reconstructions of the manufacturing and agricultural characterisation of the Venetian rural areas in the Early Modern period, but little is known about the behaviour of the rural merchants, organisation of rural enterprises, scope of their businesses, and …
Why the extended mind is nothing special but is central
The extended mind thesis states that the mind is not brain-bound but extends into the physical world. The philosophical debate around the thesis has mostly focused on extension towards epistemic artefacts, treating the phenomenon as a special capacity of the human organism to recruit external physical resources to solve individual tasks. This paper argues that if the mind extends to artefacts in the pursuit of individual tasks, it extends to othe…
The grain trade and minorities in the early modern Italian Peninsula and beyond
This paper introduces the Special Issue ‘Minorities and Grain Trade in Early Modern Europe’. While an area’s traditional supply circuits benefitted from satisfactory harvests and a stable food demand, minorities’ contribution became crucial during crisis. Due to their commercial networks, facilities, and capital, minorities and their agents were able to cope with market disruption, especially when inflation and the reconfiguration of supply areas…
The cost of living in early modern cities
This study estimates the cost of living in three cities – Florence, Bologna and Milan – in eighteenth-century northern Italy. Although they do not allow an understanding of the differences between social groups or seasonal consumption patterns, the calculation of living costs and the implied modelling have a twofold aim. First, they allow the calculation of real wages, which are obtained by dividing nominal wages by the cost of a consumption bask…
The role of quality in the grain market
The aim of this paper is to analyse the role of wheat quality in the formation of wheat prices in the early modern period, adopting eighteenth-century northern Italy as a case study. Wheat prices have been widely used by economic historians to calculate living standards, determine the degree of market integration, and date famines. Rarely, however, have economic historians focused on how wheat prices were determined. By looking at the wheat suppl…
Doctors Speak
Patients’ experiences treated with open-label placebo versus double-blind placebo
OLP and DBP participants share feelings of hope, uncertainty and curiosity but differ in the extent of conscious reflection. The counter-intuitive OLP prompts more self-examination, ambivalent feelings and active engagement compared to DBP. At the same time, OLP participants are more reluctant to attribute symptom improvement to their treatment. Our findings substantially add to the emerging picture of factors that distinguish OLP and DBP and the…
The 19th century in the Lombard Alps
The article aims to contribute to the discussion on the causes and the trajectories of the process of industrialization and economic development between the 18th and the 19th centuries. Focusing on the case study of the Lombard Alpine area, it will test the usefulness of the concept of uneven and combined development (UCD) in order to better understand the process of economic growth. The Alpine case study is particularly interesting because, in s…
Military food supply in the Republic of Venice in the eighteenth century
The aim of this article is to analyse the economic effects of the development of military logistical structures – especially food supply structures – in the state-building process in the Early Modern period, using the Republic of Venice as a case study. It will consider both technical elements (officials, structures, laws) and economic dynamics (grain purchasing and bread production contracts). The article will also profile the grain merchants who…

Weapons’ production in the Republic of Venice in the Early Modern period
The aim of the paper is to analyse the functioning of weapons’ production in the province of Brescia in the Early Modern period. The article will underline the delicate equilibrium between productive capacity, international market and military and political needs of the Republic of Venice. In the Republic of Venice, but generally in every time and area, war affected weapons’ production in different ways: in a positive way, stimulating the growth …
Protecting the commons
This article provides an overview of the evolution of the commons in the Italian peninsula during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It focuses on the connection between the phenomenon of growing community debt, the loss of property held in common and the evolution of the institutions appointed to govern such properties. The later sections of the article will discuss the situation found in each of the Italian States: Venice, Spanish Lombard…
