Dialectic of connection and separation in “respect”
This paper examines respect ( ehterām ) in Persian doctor–patient interaction as a moral–relational practice through which politeness evaluations and face are jointly constituted in interaction. While post-discursive politeness research has reconceptualised politeness as an evaluative judgement grounded in moral accountability, the relationship between such evaluations and the interactional constitution of interpersonal relations has remained und…

On Face and Face-Work in Iran
In Iran one’s image of the ‘self’, reflected in the metaphor aaberu (lit. water of the face) has been found by this author to be closely linked to a social force reflected in the metaphor harfe mardom (lit. people’s talk). Understanding the complexities of interpersonal relationships would not be possible without reference to these interwoven concepts since they are among the most salient concepts in the Iranian mind and have strong implications …
On the moral grounds of professional argumentative talk
This paper reports on two anomalous cases of intervention in two English-medium dissertation defence sessions in Iran. The first is an intervention by a co-supervisor to take side against his co-supervisor as well as to adversely retort to an examiner, pulling rank over him. The second case echoes frequent interventions by an examiner to defend the candidate against his co-examiner. The paper argues that behind this manifestation of such stark di…

Culture-generality and culture-specificity of face
In theorizing face as relational and interactional, Arundale (2010) argues that face encompasses a dialectic of relational connection and separation, which is culture-general, but can be voiced differently in different cultures. This paper examines how Arundale’s Face Constituting Theory (FCT) relates to the culture-specific emic understanding of face in Persian culture in talk in dissertation defense sessions. The data are two argumentative exce…

Refusal strategies in P ersian
This study investigates how Iranian speakers of P ersian realize the speech act of refusals to the initiating acts of offers, suggestions, invitations and requests. Two hundred and eight acts of refusals were naturally collected and classified according to the refusal classification scheme proposed by B eebe, T akahashi, and U liss‐ W eltz. The results showed that Iranian P ersian speakers employ indirect strategies and a combination of direct an…
Interactionally achieving face in criticism–criticism response exchanges
Achieve face relationally as integral part of meaning-action achievement but distinct. • Examiners predominantly orient to and project interpretings of separation. • Candidates orient to and project interpretings of connection and separation. • Criticisms put candidates in the position of having to defend themselves. • Candidates' defences are challenged by examiners. Arundale's Face Constituting Theory is used to examine the way face is conjoint…
