Relationships of Odake 1, a female skull excavated at the Odake shell-mound, Toyama, Japan, with populations of the Middle, Late, and/or Final Jomon periods in the surrounding regions
Preface to the Special Issue
Synthetic Research on the Transition of the Japanese from the Pleistocene to the Jomon and Yayoi Periods' with financial support from the Japan Society for Promotion of Science. This Special Issue of Anthropological Science was planned to gather together some of the research results regarding the anthropology of the Pleistocene of Okinawa, South Japan.Few Palaeolithic human fossils have been found in the Japanese archipelago, except for the Ryukyu…
Typicality probabilities of Late Pleistocene human fossils from East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Australia
The question of the origins of the Jomon population is examined by Campbell’s predictive approach, a method using ‘typicality probability’ which is currently the best way of comparing a single specimen with a reference population. Among the five Pleistocene fossils compared with a Late/Final Jomon sample from the Tohoku district, the analysis based on 13 cranial measurements revealed that Keilor from Australia was more likely a member of the Jomo…
Ecological correlations between neurocranial and limb bone measurements
As a step toward clarifying the causes of brachycephalization, ecological correlations, i.e. inter-group correlations, between neurocranial and limb bone measurements were investigated using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient on the basis of 24 male and 23 female samples from prehistoric, historic and modern Japanese populations. It was found that there were significant ecological correlations common to males and females between cranial leng…
Maya skeletal remains from the Copan and El Puente sites in Honduras
The permanent teeth of two individuals from the 10J-45 compound in the Classic Maya site of Copan, Honduras, and the whole skeletons of two individuals from the El Puente site, a secondary Maya center of Copan, were morphologically observed and measured. Preliminary analyses of the well-preserved permanent teeth of the two El Puente individuals show that one is closest to Native South Americans and the other to Native North Americans. Although ma…

Cranial and Postcranial Measurements of the Early Modern Edo People from 19 Archeological Sites in the Tokyo Urban Area and the Suburbs
Size Stability of the Maxillary Lateral Deciduous Incisor
On the assumption that the degree of variation in a morphological character is related to its adaptive or functional significance, it was examined, utilizing fluctuating asymmetry and the coefficient of variation, whether there are any differences in adaptive or functional significance between deciduous teeth and the corresponding permanent teeth. Pitman's tests objectively show that the maxillary lateral permanent incisor is particularly variabl…
Metric and Non-metric Characters of the Jomon Skulls from the Ebishima Shell-Mound in Northeastern Honshu, Japan
The metric and non-metric data on 32 human skulls excavated at the Ebishima (alias Kaitori) shell-mound in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, are provided for future anthropological analyses. The skeletal remains date back to the Late and/or Latest phases (ca. 2, 500 B.C. to ca. 300 B.C.) of the Jomon period. Preliminary comparisons of cranial measurements among five Jomon local populations indicate that, in both sexes, the Jomon people of the Tohoku distr…
Significant Association between Cranial Length and Sacral Breadth
The metric data of the neurocranium and the sacrum from 30 male and 20 female Japanese were examined through multivariate analyses. In result, significant associations were found between cranial length and the sacral breadths at the upper and middle levels both in males and in females. From these findings and previous studies, it is inferable that the form of the maternal pelvic inlet has been and is still one of the most important determinants f…
Neanderthal infant burial from the Dederiyeh cave in Syria
Craniofacial Measurement of Artificially Deformed Skulls from the Philippines
Twelve artificially deformed and 14 undeformed skulls of Filipinos were measured to examine the morphometric differences between them. Univariate statistical analyses on the craniofacial measurements seem to support the conclusion by previous authors that the facial skeleton is not consistently affected by artificial deformations of the cranial vault. Mahalanobis' D2 distances based on craniofacial measurements suggest that the type of cranial de…
The Neanderthal Remains from Dederiyeh Cave, Syria
Dederiyeh No. 2, a large cave site in northwestern Syria, was chosen for excavation after an extensive reconnaissance survey in the Afrin region in 1987 under the Syrian-Japan joint expedition. The cave is about 60km NW of Aleppo, the second largest city of Syria. The preliminary excavations of 1989 and 1990 uncovered a number of fragmentary human remains as well as rich lithic and faunal assemblages. The lithic industries of the cave are compose…
Speaking of Forked Tongues
Affinities of the protohistoric Kofun people of Japan with pre- and proto-historic Asian populations
For the affinity with the protohistoric Kofun people of Japan, 295 male and 190 female skeletal samples from pre- and proto-historic sites scattered over Asia were searched on the basis of seven cranial measurements. MAHALANOBIS' distances calculated for them suggest the coexistence of the natives of Japan and the immigrants of North Asian origin and/or intensive hybridization between them in protohistoric Japan. It should be noted, however, that…
Some Dental Remains of Pre-and Proto-Historic Ages from the Tohoku and Hokkaido Districts of Japan
Permanent teeth of the prehistoric Jomon and protohistoric human skeletal remains from five sites in Tohoku and Hokkaido, Japan, were morphologically observed and measured. Mean values of the dental measurements and frequencies of non-metric tooth crown characters are listed in tables

Measurement Errors in Craniometry
Although many data of cranial as well as other skeletal measurements have up to the present been accumulated in the field of anthropology, there can be seen few reports on their errors. In this article, the intra- and inter-observer errors of 22 measurement items, used frequently in Craniometry, were assessed and discussed.Intra- and inter-observer measurement error variances of each item were firstly obtained through the analysis of variance for…
Oceanic Tooth-Size Variation as a Reflection of Biological and Cultural Mixing [and Comments and Reply]
Tooth size in Oceania varies from a minimum equivalent to the figure for the pre-Chinese inhabitants of Taiwan to a maximum equivalent to the figure for large-toothed Australian Aborigines. The minimum figure is found among the easternmost and weternmost inhabitants, and the maximum figure occurs in the highlands of New Guinea. Elsewhere, intermediate figures are evident, and it is apparent that the populations in which they can be observed displ…
Genetic Variability of Permanent Tooth Crowns as Ascertained from Twin Data
Heritabilities of mesiodistal crown diameters in permanent dentition were estimated on the basis of 266 Japanese twin pairs using a formula which seems to be the most reasonable one available so far. As a result, it was recognized that all the teeth examined had significant genetic variances, and that the teeth with lower genetic variability corresponded with those which were known to have been relatively stable in the human evolution. One of pos…
