Genetic and Socioeconomic Achievement Gaps in Elementary School
Socioeconomic status gaps in academic achievement are well documented. We show that a very similar gap exists with respect to genetic differences measured by a polygenic score for educational attainment. The genetic gap increases during elementary school, but only among low-socioeconomic-status children. Consequently, high-polygenic-score children experience the largest achievement growth over the school years, even if they are born in socioecono…
Associations between common genetic variants and income provide insights about the socio-economic health gradient
We conducted a genome-wide association study on income among individuals of European descent ( N = 668,288) to investigate the relationship between socio-economic status and health disparities. We identified 162 genomic loci associated with a common genetic factor underlying various income measures, all with small effect sizes (the Income Factor). Our polygenic index captures 1–5% of income variance, with only one fourth due to direct genetic eff…
Are migrants diagnosed with a trauma-related disorder at risk of premature mortality? A register-based cohort study in Denmark
Despite the severity of many refugees' traumatic experiences, a diagnosis of a trauma-related psychiatric disorder did not appear to increase the mortality rates
Mapping genomic loci implicates genes and synaptic biology in schizophrenia
Genetic predictors of educational attainment and intelligence test performance predict voter turnout
Although the genetic influence on voter turnout is substantial (typically 40-50%), the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Across the social sciences, research suggests that 'resources for politics' (as indexed notably by educational attainment and intelligence test performance) constitute a central cluster of factors that predict electoral participation. Educational attainment and intelligence test performance are heritable. This suggests that…
Discovery of the first genome-wide significant risk loci for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a highly heritable childhood behavioral disorder affecting 5% of children and 2.5% of adults. Common genetic variants contribute substantially to ADHD susceptibility, but no variants have been robustly associated with ADHD. We report a genome-wide association meta-analysis of 20,183 individuals diagnosed with ADHD and 35,191 controls that identifies variants surpassing genome-wide significance in…
Identification of common genetic risk variants for autism spectrum disorder
Genome-wide association analyses identify 44 risk variants and refine the genetic architecture of major depression
Attempted suicide and violent criminality among Danish second-generation immigrants according to parental place of origin
BACKGROUND: Immigrant populations in Western European countries have grown in their size and diversity, but little is known about risks of self-directed and externalised violence among second-generation immigrants. AIMS: To compare risks for attempted suicides and violent offending among second-generation immigrants to Denmark according to parental region of origin versus the native Danish population. METHODS: Data from interlinked national Danis…
Youth, suicide attempts and low level of education
BACKGROUND: In Denmark, it is a political goal that 95% of all young people should complete an upper secondary education. For some young people, this goal can be difficult to achieve. An association has been established between suicidal behaviour and school performance. AIM: We hypothesise that young people who have attempted suicide have a lower chance of finishing secondary education. METHODS: We used Danish historical population registers to p…
PP26 Caesarean Delivery and Subsequent Birth Interval, Ectopic Pregnancy, Miscarriage or Stillbirth-a Danish Register-based Cohort Study
Background Despite high caesarean delivery rates worldwide, limited data are available on the effect of a prior caesarean delivery on subsequent fertility. Aim To estimate the time to next birth and the risk of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy and stillbirth in women with a prior caesarean delivery compared to women with a prior vaginal delivery. Methods Using Danish registry data we identified a cohort of women giving birth between 1982 and 2010 (…
Childlessness, parental mortality and psychiatric illness
BACKGROUND: Childlessness increases the risk of premature mortality and psychiatric illness. These results might, however, be confounded by factors that affect both the chance of parenthood as well as the risk of premature death and psychiatric illness. METHODS: Using population-based health and social registers, we conducted a follow-up study of 21 276 childless couples in in vitro fertility treatment. RESULTS: The crude death rate ratio in wome…
Social integration and suicide
Highlights► Suicide trends are assessed for males and females in Denmark. ► Years covered are 1906–2006. ► Divorce is found to predict both male and female suicide
Psychosocial work environment and antidepressant medication
The study does not indicate that a poor psychosocial work environment among public service employees is related to prescription of antidepressant pharmaceuticals. These findings need cautious interpretation because of lacking individual exposure assessments
Global measure of satisfaction with psychosocial work conditions versus measures of specific aspects of psychosocial work conditions in explaining sickness absence
Low global satisfaction with psychosocial work conditions is associated with increased levels of sickness absence. Including specific aspects of psychosocial work conditions in the model does not provide further information regarding the nature of this association
Psychosocial working conditions and the risk of depression and anxiety disorders in the Danish workforce
Psychosocial work exposures related to the risk of depressive and anxiety disorders differ as between the sexes. The pattern of risks is inconsistent. The results give rise to rethinking both study designs and possible causal links between work exposures and mental health
Basic Concepts in Statistics and Epidemiology
Theodore H MacDonald. Published by Radcliffe Publishing Ltd, Oxford, 2007, pp 214, £21.95 (softcover). ISBN 9781846191244. This book is a great primer for understanding underlying concepts and practical issues related to statistical ideas in public health. This book is well written, and the author’s 15-year-long teaching experience shines through. This book consists of 15 chapters with elucidating examples and study exercises. Chapter 1 introduce…
Combining individual and ecological data to determine compositional and contextual socio-economic risk factors for suicide
Work related violence and threats and the risk of depression and stress disorders
Objective: To examine the risk of depression and stress related disorders as a function of occupational exposure to violence and threats. Design: Population based nested case-control study. Setting: All gainfully employed Danes. Cases and controls: 14 166 hospital inpatients and outpatients, aged 18–65, treated for affective or stress related disorders during 1995–1998 selected from The Danish Psychiatric Central Research Register and 58 060 cont…
Psychiatric illness, socioeconomic status, and marital status in people committing suicide
Study objective: Suicides cluster in both families and persons with psychiatric disorders and socioeconomic disadvantages. This study compares these factors between suicide cases, their siblings, and population based controls in an attempt to evaluate both the familial and the individual element of these factors. Design: Nested case-control study. Information on causes of death, psychiatric admission, marital status, children, and socioeconomic f…
Effect of psychiatric illness and labour market status on suicide
Study objective: To describe the association between labour market status and death by suicide with focus on admission with a psychiatric disorder. Design: Nested case-control study. Data from routine registers. Setting: Entire Danish population. Participants: 9011 people aged 25–60 years who committed suicide during 1982–1997 and 180 220 matched controls. Main results: In the general population, not being fully employed is associated with a twof…
Suicide Risk in Relation to Socioeconomic, Demographic, Psychiatric, and Familial Factors
OBJECTIVE: Suicide risk was addressed in relation to the joint effect of factors regarding family structure, socioeconomics, demographics, mental illness, and family history of suicide and mental illness, as well as gender differences in risk factors. METHOD: Data were drawn from four national Danish longitudinal registers. Subjects were all 21,169 persons who committed suicide in 1981-1997 and 423,128 live comparison subjects matched for age, ge…

Gender differences in risk factors for suicide in Denmark
BACKGROUND: Gender is one of the most frequently replicated predictors for suicide. AIMS: To identify risk factors for suicide among males and females and to investigate whether risk factors for suicide differ by gender. METHOD: A time-matched nested case-control design was performed using Danish longitudinal register databases to obtain 811 suicide cases and 79 871 controls. Data were analysed using conditional logistic regression. RESULTS: A hi…
