This report reflects on, and contrasts, gender in Italy and among the Wagogo of Tanzania with regard to two distinct concepts: motherhood and mothering. The cultural context of childhood diarrhoea among Gogo infants
The paper describes the cultural context of two specific types of childhood diarrhoea during breastfeeding among the Wagogo of Tanzania. Wagogo believe that both the mother's and the father's behaviour affect the proper development of their newborn child. Research conducted among the Wagogo of Tanzania has revealed a wide range of beliefs and practices associated with breastfeeding. Prolonged breastfeeding remains widespread in the community studied. Infants are nursed on demand, for comfort as well as nutrition. Anthropologic research conducted among the Wagogo, a semipastoral people in central Tanzania, elaborated the critical role that mothers play in the growth and development of their infants during the periods of breast feeding and weaning. 114 mothers recruited from a local health facility were interviewed.
