Repatriating the Alan Lomax Haitian Recordings in Post-Quake Haiti
Alan Lomax’s Haitian recordings, 1936–1937, rediscovered in the Library of Congress Archives of Folk Culture in 1999, were edited to produce a boxed set in 2009, with the intention of repatriating the set and eventually the entire corpus of 1,500 recordings and six films to Haiti. Barbership singing is often dismissed by its critics as merely an enjoyable hobby. Though long popular with both its public and participants, it has been relatively neglected in the field of music studies. Robert A. Stebbins demonstrates that barbershop singing is an elaborate and complicated form of serious leisure that provides its participants with distinctive lifestyles. The Barbershop Singer is a unique case study of this significant musical…

Mezanmi, Kouman Nou Ye? My Friends, How Are You
In 1990, Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide appointed Farah Juste, a well-known political singer from Miami, to be the representative to the government from the Dizysèm Depatman (10th Department), a neologism for the Haitian dyaspo or dyaspora (diaspora). Aristide hoped to draw on the resources, talents, and investment potential of the diaspora to rebuild insular Haiti. By appointing a singer as its representative, Aristide recognized the l…
