Experience of Using Artifi cial Intelligence and Deep Machine Learning Methods in Archaeological Research in the Southern Trans-Urals
This article summarizes the current uses of the methods of artificial intelligence and deep machine learning in archaeological research from the recent publications by Russian and international research teams. The main application of convolutional neural networks in archaeology is the search for archaeological sites using cartographic data which were obtained by various methods and make it possible to construct 2D and 3D models of the present-day…
A Metal Complex from the Krivoe Ozero I (Nagaibakskoe) Settlement
The Krivoe Ozero I (Nagaibakskoe) settlement is one of the largest sites of the Alakul culture of the Bronze Age in the Southern Trans-Urals. The archaeological survey of the site, test trench of the cultural layer, and many artifacts collected from the settlement indicate that this was a single-layer site of the Bronze Age, covering the area of about 47 000 m2. The settlement consisted of at least 34 dwellings which were located in five or six p…
Archaeological Microdistrict of the Late Bronze Age in the Middle Reaches of the Sintashta River
The archaeological microdistrict in the middle reaches of the Sintashta River was identified based on an analysis of the spatial distribution of the Bronze Age archaeological sites. It is 31 km long and includes 12 Late Bronze Age settlements, including two fortified ones; as well as nine funerary monuments, which included 105 mounds, and menhirs, located on the outskirts of two settlements. Most of the settlements are located on the terrace abov…
The Functions of the Bronze Age Ash Heaps in the Southern Trans-Urals
The functions and origin of Bronze Age ash heaps have been the topic of scientific debate for a long time. The ash heaps of the Southern Trans-Urals as separate objects began to be studied in archaeology relatively recently. The paper focuses on the ash heaps that were uncovered in the course of excavations at three nearby Bronze Age settlements in the Southern Trans-Urals – Stepnoye, Streletskoye-1, and Chernorechye 2. The work was aimed at anal…
Analytical Studies and Typological Attribution of the Arsenical Bronze Knife Found Near the Erlygas Settlement, Chelyabinsk Region
The nature of some Late Bronze Age iron-bearing artefacts of the Ural-Kazakhstan region
The problem of the beginning of iron production in the Late Bronze Age of the Ural-Kazakhstan region is dis-cussed. For this, 13 iron-bearing artefacts from nine settlements that functioned in the 2nd mil. BC were studied using the SEM-EDS and LA-ICP-MS methods: metal objects, metallurgical slags, and a bimetallic droplet. Most of the studied artefacts are not related to the iron metallurgy. High ferric impurities in copper metal products of the …
Fortifi ed Settlement Andreevskoye. History of Functioning Based on the Results of Multidisciplinary Research
The Andreevskoye settlement (Bredinsky district of the Chelyabinsk Region, the left bank of the Sintashta River of the Tobolsk basin) belongs to a rare type of sites of the Trans-Ural Bronze Age with dense housing development, enclosed by a system of walls and ditches. Deciphering archival aerial photography, the use of low-depth geophysics (micromagnetic survey and ground penetrating radar), analysis of the microrelief, and test pits allowed us …
Radiocarbon chronology of the Bronze Age cultural traditions in the Trans-Urals
Reconstruction of the Settlement Levoberezhnoe Plan of the Bronze Age (South Ural, Russia)
In the Southern Urals in 2015–2019 research was conducted on the fortified settlement of the Bronze Age Levoberezhnoe (Sintashta II). An asphalt road was drawn through the settlement, during the construction of which about a third of the monument’s area was destroyed. Excavations of the monument have been carried out since 2015. It has been established that the settlement is multi-layered; it functioned in the Late Bronze Age from the turn of the…
