A bibliometric analysis of the impact of climate change on immovable cultural heritage employing Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
This study presents the first large-scale bibliometric analysis of academic research applying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to explore the relationship between climate change and immovable cultural heritage. Drawing on 82 English-language publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection (1994–2024), the study maps the field’s evolution over the past three decades. Results show a steady increase in publications and citations, refl…
The Analysis of a Column of the Tomb 7 Colonnade at the Tombs of the Kings Archeological Site
This research investigates the colonnade of Tomb 7 at the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos, Cyprus. Specifically, a multi-drum column located at the south-east corner of the tomb is examined from both geometric and structural perspectives. Being the only standing element to support the entablature on that side of the tomb, the column is crucial for maintaining the structural stability of the monument. Numerical struc…
AI Chatbots and Remote Sensing Archaeology
Chatbots have emerged as a promising interface for facilitating access to complex datasets, allowing users to pose questions in natural language rather than relying on specialized technical workflows. At the same time, remote sensing has transformed archaeological practice by producing vast amounts of imagery from LiDAR, drones, and satellites. While these advances have created unprecedented opportunities for discovery, they also pose significant…
Learning from the Rare
Detecting surface potsherds using low-altitude remote sensing is challenging due to severe class imbalance and limited training data. This study develops and validates a semi-automatic detection methodology that adapts threshold-optimized boosting classifiers (AdaBoost, XGBoost) to maximize ceramic detection recall under extreme class imbalance in the Western Megaris archeological landscape, Greece. Models were trained on only 15% of the availabl…
Monitoring Remote Archaeological Sites Through Open-Access Satellite Datasets Against Natural Hazards—Case Study
This research presents a comprehensive multi-domain environmental assessment of Delos Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, through integration of long-term atmospheric and satellite remote sensing datasets. A significant methodological contribution of this research is the development of a cross-mission harmonization approach that enables the reconstruction of a continuous, multi-decadal atmospheric record. By implementing a hierarchical calibrat…
Heritage BIM and City Information Modelling for the conservation and management of built heritage environments
Despite advancements in smart city management through digital representation technologies, operational and accessibility challenges remain in multimodal visualization and integrating high-quality, linked big data within a unified online environment. Key issues include representing irregular geometry in parametric associative design logic, visualizing chronological transformations of heritage buildings, linking procedural Building Information Mode…
Physically Based Predictive Modelling of Archaeological Proxies Using Cropmarks
Cropmarks, as archaeological proxies, offer a valuable means of detecting buried sites through remote sensing. Yet, the scalability of such methods across varied archaeological contexts remains underexplored, and AI‐based modelling approaches are still in early stages. This gap stems from environmental variability, limited ground‐truth data due to intrusive validation and insufficient collaboration between archaeology and computer science. In thi…
Tombs and Necropoleis of Cyprus
The dataset contains geospatial information relating to hundreds of single tombs and necropoleis across Cyprus, dating to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The data were collected by the first author for the needs of her PhD thesis. The dataset is deposited on KTISIS and is hereby made available to future research efforts for update. There is substantial reuse potential pertaining to research on Cyprus as well as the wider Mediterranean in areas…
Geomatic Sensors for Heritage Documentation
This review paper aims to provide a meta-analysis of the scientific literature for heritage documentation and monitoring using geo-information sensors. The study initially introduces the main types of geomatic sensors that are currently widely used for heritage studies. Although the list provided here is indicative rather than exhaustive, it provides a general overview of the variety of sensors used for different observation scales. The study nex…
The Kotroni Archaeological Research Project (Kasp)
The Kotroni Archaeological Research Project (KASP) seeks to understand the relationship between the natural and human landscape of Aphidna from prehistory through to the present, and how such rural communities contributed to the economic, social and cultural life of larger, ‘core’ centres in the region. As one of the constitutional demes of Classical Athens, Aphidna was steeped in the foundational history of the Athenian polis, which saw in it a …
Reconstructing an ancient mining landscape
Extensively worked in antiquity, Skouriotissa remains the only active copper mine on the island of Cyprus. The modern, open-cast operation, however, has almost completely obliterated the earlier mining landscape. Here the authors report the results of investigations, including dating, of the ancient topography of the mine. They incorporate spatial data derived from archival sources, recent fieldwork and absolute dating into a geographical informa…
The Cyprus coastal heritage landscapes within Marine Spatial Planning process
Colour to Greyscale Pixels
To date, archived aerial photographs or recently declassified satellite CORONA images have been used to support archaeological research. However the use of such images is limited to the interpretation of greyscale images, which can be improved by image analysis processes including filters, edge detection techniques, etc. This article presents a methodology to improve the interpretation of these images by adding colour from recently acquired satel…
Cities of the dead
Impact of urban sprawl to cultural heritage monuments
Observatory validation of Neolithic tells (“Magoules”) in the Thessalian plain, central Greece, using hyperspectral spectroradiometric data
Optimum temporal and spectral window for monitoring crop marks over archaeological remains in the Mediterranean region
Integration of geophysical surveys, ground hyperspectral measurements, aerial and satellite imagery for archaeological prospection of prehistoric sites
