From German Mines to Le Nôtre's Gardens
This article presents the results of an isotopic study of the lead used in the fountains of the gardens at the palaces of Versailles and Vaux‐le‐Vicomte—two iconic examples of French formal gardens designed by André Le Nôtre. The construction of these monumental gardens in the 17th century required considerable quantities of lead, a material not found in the subsoil of the Paris region and therefore necessarily imported. Lead Isotope analysis of …
The diversity of plant resources exploited in the palaces of Agbomè (kingdom of Danxomè/Dahomey), Bénin
The Danxomè kingdom developed in West Africa between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries AD. Its period of influence coincided with that of the Atlantic slave trade and in turn with important changes in the population’s dietary habits. Historical and archaeological studies of southern Bénin and Danxomè have highlighted the rich and varied diet of the population and the large number of plants they cultivated and used. However, research in the…
Continuity of lead-silver production in the area of Cartagena-La Unión (Spain) after the Phoenician trade crisis of the 6th century BC
The cupellation processes remain unchanged from the 8th to the 3rd century BCE in the Alicante region. • Lead isotope analysis shows that the mines of Cartagena were exploited after the crisis in Phoenician trade. • The exploitation of lead-silver suffered a recession, but the exploitation of the mines did not cease completely. The 6th century BCE is marked by major changes in the Mediterranean trade routes. These changes had a significant impact…
Formation processes of archaeobotanical assemblages of an early Thule Iñupiaq dwelling at Cape Espenberg, northwest Alaska
Arctic. • Archaeobotany. • Formation process. • Inuit. • Plant use. Archaeobotany remains an underdeveloped discipline in the Arctic, with comparatively little known about the processes involved in the formation of plant assemblages in ancestral Inuit sites. Archaeobotanical records from seasonal forager sites at high latitudes present several peculiarities: 1) excellent preservation; 2) lack of domesticated species prior to contact with European…

Dating Coastal Archaeological Wood From Pingusugruk (15th–17th CE), Northern Alaska
Along the coasts of northern Alaska, in a treeless tundra environment, the primary wood resource for coastal populations is driftwood, a seasonal and exogenous resource carried by the major rivers of western North America. The potential of Alaskan coastal archaeological wood for tree-ring research was first assessed in the 1940s by archaeologist and tree-ring research pioneer J. L. Giddings. Despite his success, the difficulties of dendrochronolo…
Mesolithic Freshwater Fishing
In this article we investigate the importance of freshwater fishing during the Mesolithic in France, in inland sites where fishing was always associated with big game hunting. We present a review of Mesolithic sites that have yielded freshwater fish remains and focus on a case study from an occupation dated to the eighth millennium BC at Les Cabônes rock shelter, located near the Doubs River, that yielded over 9,300 fish remains. Cyprinid (includ…
Indurated soil nodules
The identification of controlled fires in ancient agricultural systems is important for understanding how past societies managed the landscape. Although the use of fire in agriculture is documented in recent historical records, and combustion markers can persist in soils over a long time scale, this is a complex issue because combustion traits in general are ubiquitous. Archaeopedological surveys undertaken in an ancient forest in Burgundy (Franc…

Recent Excavation and Recording at the New Neolithic Rock Art Site of Vallée Aux Noirs, Buthiers (Seine‐et‐Marne, France)
Following the exceptional discovery of Neolithic engravings on a boulder at Vallée aux Noirs in the Fontainebleau forest, south of Paris, an excavation trench was opened in order to access the buried part of the decorated rock panel and explore the stratigraphic context of the artwork. A palaeosol was found two metres below the modern ground level, underneath multiple layers of sterile sandy soil forming a very compact sequence from which only on…

In southwestern Niger, near Niamey, several thousand singleuse bloomery furnaces have been mapped and identified. The archaeological study of approximately 30 furnaces and their slag reveals the existence of four methods for iron smelting: three types of pit furnace and one slag-tapping type. The slag pit furnaces are clearly differentiated by the form and volume of their pits. All slag-tapping furnaces drain off slag through small openings. The …
Inferring the agrobiodiversity of Vitis vinifera L. (grapevine) in ancient Greece by comparative shape analysis of archaeological and modern seeds

A paleoecological perspective on 1450 years of human impacts from a lake in southern Greenland
A multiproxy sedimentary record from Lake Igaliku in southern Greenland documents 1450 years of human impacts on the landscape. Diatoms, scaled chrysophytes, and C and N geochemistry show perturbations consistent with recent agricultural activities (post-ad 1980), superimposed upon long-term environmental variability. While the response to Norse agriculture (~ad 986–1450) is weak, the biological response to the last 30 years of modern sheep farmi…

Vieil-Hesdin
Ch. Petit, Vieil-Hesdin : Archaeological exploration of a vanished city. The present village of Vieil-Hesdin has replaced the mediaeval city of Hesdin destroyed by Charles Quint in 1553. This city, famous in the XHth century for its cloth was still more highly reputed for its castle which the Dukes of Burgundy established as one of the most important halting- places for the nobility of the Occident in the XIV and XV centuries. Apparently this imp…

The history and impacts of farming activities in south Greenland
Agriculture in southern Greenland has a two-phase history: with the Norse, who first settled and farmed the region between 985 ad and circa 1450 ad , and with the recent reintroduction of sheep farming (1920 ad to the present). The agricultural sector in Greenland is expected to grow over the next century as anticipated climate warming extends the length of the growing season and increases productivity. This article presents a synthesis of result…

Years of vegetation history and land-use changes in the Morvan Mountains (France)
This paper aims to reconstruct the vegetation history of a middle mountain – the Morvan (Burgundy, France) – since the Neolithic (i.e. 7000 years). The results of palynological and non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs) analysis performed on 10 peat cores document the main phases of human agro-pastoral practices and natural resources management which drove the formation of the cultural landscape of the Morvan Massif over time. To document the history of …

Magnetic prospecting of diachronic structures (antiquity to First World War) on the site of the sanctuary of Ribemont-sur-Ancre (Somme, France)
The site of the sanctuary of Ribemont-sur-Ancre (Somme, France) is of major scientific interest for the knowledge of the Celtic civilization in Europe. It also presents other peculiarities: two clearly identifiable periods of occupation—the first one as early as third century BC- to the second century AD and the second one from 1914–1918. In the area disrupted through military operations, the remains of several epochs are intermingled. In order t…

Chupicuaro archaeological sites
Aims of the project The area of Chupicuaro, located in the middle valley of the Lerma river, is regarded as one of the major archaeological targets of central Mexico for the late pre-classic period (600 BC-AD 300). Archaeological investigations in the area have been limited because of a large reservoir constructed in 1948 and severe plundering. Since 1999 a French-Mexican research program has concentrated on broadening knowledge of the local Chup…
