  • Der Mensch als Bild des unergründlichen Gottes

Open Access•Rainer Hirsch‐Luipold, Ilya Kaplan et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Mensch Als Bild des Unergründlichen…•2023

God is unfathomable and unknowable. This thought is deeply entrenched in the Jewish-Christian tradition. On the other hand, Biblical texts speak of the human being or Christ as having been created in God's image. How can these two things be conceived of together? These articles build bridges between East and West, between history and the present, bringing ancient and medieval writings into dialogue with contemporary theological positions.

  • Die Brotrede Philons aus Alexandreia in Legum allegoriae 3,169–178

    Beatrice Wyss•ARTICLE•Early Christianity•2021

In Leg.3.169–178, Philo of Alexandria gives a dense and concise sketch of his theory of the logos. In this essay, first I show the scriptural basis of Philos interpretation of manna as Gods word or logos (Leg.3.173–174). Second, I offer a running commentary of Leg.3.169–178, discussing different aspects of Philos theory of the logos hinted at in this passage. In the Jewish scriptures, Philo found Gods word as active in the process of creation and…

    Beatrice Wyss•ARTICLE•Early Christianity•2018

Philo of Alexandria is influenced by three different traditions: (1) Judaism, (2) Greek philosophy, and (3) the Egyptian environment. In his account of the fifth day of creation (Opif.62-68), he follows the Stoic view on animals as non-rational beings; in his De animalibus he discusses the question of the rationality of animals with the same arguments one finds in contemporary pagan literature. Living in Alexandria, Philo was an eye-witness to th…

    Beatrice Wyss•ARTICLE•Early Christianity•2014

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that the term »sophists« became a term of abuse against religious adversaries in the 2nd cent. CE, not only in polemics between christians and pagans, as one could assume, but also in polemics between christians and between pagans. Against this background one understands why Lucian named Jesus of Nazareth a »crucified sophist« (Peregr. 13).
