A Field Guide to Human Skeletal Identification
Trends and developments in physical anthropology, 1990–91
The 1408 members of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists were surveyed by mail regarding professional background, training deficiencies, opinions regarding areas of future importance to the discipline, and teaching/research specializations. A total of 544 responses (39%) resulted; 71% were from professionals in the United States and 16% were from U.S. students. Survey results are compared to surveys done in 1971 and in 1978, and a…
Determination of sex from arm bone measurements
Discriminant function analysis has been applied to numerous dimensions of the cranial and postcranial skeleton for sex determination of U.S. blacks and whites and is extended here to five measurements of the arm and wrist. These include maximum lengths of the long arm bones in addition to two measurements that reflect wrist breadth. Our results indicate that whites are more accurately classified than blacks, but seven of the 31 possible measureme…
Fluctuating asymmetry in fetuses of diabetic rhesus macaques
This study examines dental fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in two samples of fetal rhesus monkeys, one composed of 19 fetuses from diabetic mothers (FDM) and the other of 20 fetuses from nondiabetic mothers. Seventeen measurements were taken on the deciduous dentition of right and left mandibles. The degree of FA was assessed by comparing FDM to fetuses of normal mothers by (a) correlation between right and left sides, and (b) analysis of variation di…

Sexual Dimorphism in Homo Sapiens
On the expression of sex dimorphism
A procedure is developed and presented for the calculation of sex dimorphism in quantitative variates. Instead of expressing sex dimorphism by the male X̄/female X ̄ ratio, it deletes the area of overlap of the two curves and provides the proportion of males and females in terms of the areas under each curve. Examination of anthropometric variates among Eskimos from northwestern Alaska and the Hadza from Tanzania indicates that extremity measurem…
Deciduous tooth dimensions in fetal rhesus monkeys from mothers with induced diabetes
Thirty‐four measurements of the deciduous dentition in 21 fetal rhesus monkeys from diabetic mothers (FDM) and 36 nondiabetic fetuses were compared in order to assess the effects of induced maternal diabetes on the teeth of third‐trimester fetuses. After exclusion of 14 variates due to significant age‐related variation, univariate statistical analysis suggested a trend toward smaller teeth in the FDMs. Multivariate discriminant function analysis …
Trends and developments in physical anthropology, 1978–1979
Members of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists were asked to supply information about their current programs and their own graduate training in order to compile a training directory and to analyze certain aspects of the discipline. The data indicate that the majority consider their graduate training to have been deficient, mainly in statistics, genetics, chemistry, physiology, and mathematics. The areas thought most important for…

On the estimation of some demographic characteristics on a prehistoric population from the American Southwest
After a general discussion of some of the limitations and assumptions inherent in paleodemographic studies, a method for the estimation of average life expectancy when only deaths by age are known is described and applied to the remains from Point of Pines, a prehistoric Western Pueblo population from the American Southwest. It was found that the method was not applicable to these data in its entirety, since there were considerable differences in…
Lumbo‐sacral malformations and spina bifida occulta in a group of proto‐historic Modoc Indians
A complex lumbo‐sacral malformation has been found in an unusually high frequency in a group of proto‐historic Modoc Indians. Following a short review of vertebral abnormalities in general, the condition is described. It is suggested tentatively that inbreeding might be in part responsible for the high frequency

The typological versus the evolutionary approach in skeletal population studies
An examination of ideal and extreme type constructs indicates that ideal types do not serve as testable hypotheses in a theoretical system. Extreme types, on the other hand, can be empirically valid. In physical anthropological studies of human skeletal populations, ideal typology must be replaced with population thinking if we hope to arrive at a meaningful understanding of the biological attributes of prehistoric populations
Craniostenosis
The inspection of the skeletal remains of over 1000 individuals recovered largely from Southwestern archaeological excavations has revealed 16 cases of premature craniosynostosis. Recent research indicates that this condition results extrinsically from a primary malformation of the cranial base. The premature closure of one or another of the sutural areas is a specific symptom of this malformation
The etiology and genetics of wormian bones
The relationship between the length of the basi‐occiput and the presence of wormian bones is studied in 116 Negro, 113 White, and 50 Southwestern American Indian adult male crania. Among all three races, there is a statistically significant difference between those individuals who possess wormian bones and those who do not. Furthermore, the basi‐occiput length in the Negro, regardless of sutural bones, differs significantly from that in the White…
