Applying Race and Ethnicity in Health Disparities Research
Health professionals commonly reference race and ethnicity to inform health care and administrative decisions. However, health researchers (and, arguably, society at large) misapply race and ethnicity when assuming an inherent relationship of these concepts with biological and health outcomes of interest. Misapplication of race potentially results from socially embedded identification predicated upon race essentialism, the belief that people with…
AI in Biomedicine—A Forward-Looking Perspective on Health Equity
As new artificial intelligence (AI) tools are being developed and as AI continues to revolutionize healthcare, its potential to advance health equity is increasingly recognized. The 2024 Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) Consortium National Conference session titled "Artificial Intelligence: Safely, Ethically, and Responsibly" brought together experts from diverse institutions to explore AI's role and challenges in advancing health…
Health Disparities Investigator Development through a Team-Science Pilot Projects Program
Profound health disparities are widespread among Native Hawaiians, other Pacific Islanders, and Filipinos in Hawai'i. Efforts to reduce and eliminate health disparities are limited by a shortage of investigators trained in addressing the genetic, socio economic, and environmental factors that contribute to disparities. In this conference proceedings report from the 2022 RCMI Consortium National Conference, we describe our mentoring program, with …
Strengthening and Sustaining Inter-Institutional Research Collaborations and Partnerships
Inter-institutional collaborations and partnerships play fundamental roles in developing and diversifying the basic biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research enterprise at resource-limited, minority-serving institutions. In conjunction with the Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) Program National Conference in Bethesda, Maryland, in December 2019, a special workshop was convened to summarize current practices and to explore futur…
The Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) Translational Research Network
The Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) program was established by the US Congress to support the development of biomedical research infrastructure at minority-serving institutions granting doctoral degrees in the health professions or in a health-related science. RCMI institutions also conduct research on diseases that disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minorities (ie, African Americans/Blacks, American Indians and Alask…

Academic Response to Storm-Related Natural Disasters—Lessons Learned
On 30 October 2017, selected faculty and administrators from Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) grantee institutions gathered to share first-hand accounts of the devastating impact of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, which had interrupted academic activities, including research, education, and training in Puerto Rico, Florida, and Texas. The presenters reviewed emergency response measures taken by their institutions to maintain c…

A Population‐Based Survival Assessment of Categorizing Level III and IV Rural Hospitals as Trauma Centers
Context: Patients injured in rural areas are hypothesized to have improved outcomes if statewide trauma systems categorize rural hospitals as Level III and IV trauma centers, though evidence to support this belief is sparse. Purpose: To determine if there is improved survival among injured patients hospitalized in states that categorize rural hospitals as trauma centers. Methods: We analyzed a retrospective cohort of injured patients included in …
Racial Disparities in Mortality Among Adults Hospitalized After Injury
BACKGROUND: Injury is a major cause of death in adults. Although racial disparities in healthcare access and health outcomes are well documented for medical conditions, the influence of race on access to emergent care after injury has received little scrutiny. OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether race was associated with risk of in-hospital death after injury. RESEARCH DESIGN: Data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (1998-2002…
Mortality Among Seriously Injured Patients Treated in Remote Rural Trauma Centers Before and After Implementation of a Statewide Trauma System
BACKGROUND: Injury mortality in rural regions remains high with little evidence that trauma system implementation has benefited rural populations. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate risk-adjusted mortality in remote regions of Oregon before and after implementation of a statewide trauma system. RESEARCH DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study assessing injury mortality through 30 days after hospital discharge. SETTING: Nine rural Oregon hospitals serving counti…
