Improving Quantitative Measurement of Identity Exploration and Commitment Processes
In this commentary, we evaluate the theoretical and conceptual strengths and weaknesses of two widely used measures of identity exploration and commitment processes and provide recommendations for using them and improving upon them. Building on several other published critiques, our evaluation focuses on four attention points, including 1) Holistic measurement of cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of exploration and commitment processes…
Age Patterns in Dual‐Cycle Identity Processes and Their Associations With Life Satisfaction
OBJECTIVE: Identity development research often applies the identity status approach, which distinguishes different dimensions of identity-relevant commitment levels and exploration behavior. However, age differences in these dimensions have mostly been examined in adolescence and young adulthood, leaving questions about their variation across the adult lifespan. Additionally, associations between identity and life satisfaction have been equally u…
Narrative Agency and Communion as Predictors of Trait and State Self‐Esteem Dynamics
INTRODUCTION: Self-esteem has important implications for life outcomes, yet little is known about its antecedents at both the trait and state levels. We examined agency and communion-coded from personal narratives about a past turning-point event-as predictors of trait self-esteem levels, long-term trait changes, and short-term fluctuations (instability) in state self-esteem. METHODS: = 24.5, 75% females) over a 2-year period, tracking their univ…
All Identity Content Domains are Equal, but Some are More Equal Than Others
Identity development is an important task throughout adulthood and is linked to adjustment. Yet, past quantitative research has often focused on global processes, such as commitment and exploration, without taking identity domains into account. The present study captures characteristics of 21 identity content domains, building on past quantitative and qualitative research. In two samples of Dutch adults (N = 507, Mage = 48.37; N = 437, Mage = 20.…
The role of psychopathology centrality in psychopathology stability and associations with life satisfaction in adolescence
Psychopathology can play an important role in the lives of adolescents. However, no research has as of yet examined the role of psychopathology centrality in the course of psychopathology and well-being in adolescence. The present study examined the role of psychopathology centrality in the stability of psychopathology and in the association between psychopathology and satisfaction with life, both across a one-year period, using a sample of 82 Du…
A Process‐ and Status‐Centered Approach to Educational Identity Development in Late Adolescence
OBJECTIVE: During late adolescence, adolescents' educational identity may be especially salient as they need to make important decisions regarding their education around the transition from secondary school to tertiary education. The way adolescents shape their identity during this period may have important implications for their academic functioning and psychological well-being. METHOD: = 17.8, 73.6% female) to examine identity change in late ad…
Overt and Subtle Discrimination and Psychological Well-Being
Ethnic-racial identity (ERI) has been reported as mediator and moderator of the relation between discrimination and psychological well-being. However, it remains unclear how different forms of discrimination (i.e., overt and subtle) predict well-being over time, and whether ERI exploration and commitment mediate or moderate this association. This preregistered study explored the associations of overt and subtle discrimination with well-being (i.e…
Identity development across the transition from primary to secondary school
The secondary school transition may be important for identity change. We investigated identity change and subgroups therein, and whether personal and environmental factors explain subgroup membership. Data was used from four timepoints across the last year of primary and first year of secondary school from 241 adolescents (Mage = 11.6, range 10.5–12.8). Identity change was generally in the direction of higher pre-transition commitment and lower p…
Who am I? Studying Autobiographical Reasoning, Identity Commitment and Exploration Processes, and Narrative Content in Unison
Identity research focuses on multiple processes capturing how adolescents form and maintain a sense of self. However, identity content (the “what” of identity) might impact associations between identity and the association with well-being. We examined this potential role of content (i.e., valence and life domain) in two studies, focusing on autobiographical reasoning in written narratives (i.e., self-event connections), educational identity commi…
Meaning making about and across self-relevant experiences
Making meaning is an important process through which individuals keep their identity up-to-date, but has often been measured in a way that conflates dispositional, trait-like influences with narrative-specific influences. The present study aimed to disentangle these influences during adolescence by examining the general tendency for meaning making, measured as self-event connections, across three self-relevant narratives in relation to dual-cycle…
The relation between self‐event connections and personality functioning in youth with severe psychopathology
OBJECTIVE: One way in which individuals construct their narrative identity is by making self-event connections, which are often linked to better functioning. Being unable to make connections is related to identity discontinuity and psychopathology. Work in the general population corroborates this association, but also highlights the importance of focusing on specific aspects of these connections and on vulnerable populations. METHOD: = 19.5, long…
Examining Secondary School Choice Processes as a Predictor of Adjustment After the School Transition
The secondary school transition is an important moment in adolescents' lives. Taking a prospective approach, the present study examined whether educational identity regarding a secondary school choice and own and parental expectations during the last year of primary school predicted post-transition school and psychological adjustment in Dutch adolescents (N = 314, M age = 11.58). Additionally, the study qualitatively examined the reasons adolesce…
Dynamics of Identity Development in Adolescence
One of the key developmental tasks in adolescence is to develop a coherent identity. The current review addresses progress in the field of identity research between the years 2010 and 2020. Synthesizing research on the development of identity, we show that identity development during adolescence and early adulthood is characterized by both systematic maturation and substantial stability. This review discusses the role of life events and transitio…
With a little help from my friends? Perceived friendship quality and narrative identity in adolescence
Stressful events are associated with various outcomes, but there is variability in these associations suggesting that the interpretation of these events is important. This interpretation is reflected in the narratives adolescents tell of events, which are largely constructed in social interactions. We examined the associations of perceived friendship quality with self-event connections and redemption in turning point narratives, in a sample of Du…
Self-esteem and satisfaction with social relationships across time
14,741). When using CT-SEM, we found a bidirectional positive relation between self-esteem and satisfaction with social relationships, with larger effects over longer intervals. When using RI-CT-SEM, we found the largest effects of self-esteem and satisfaction with social relationships across intervals of 1 year, with smaller effect sizes at both shorter and longer intervals. In addition, the effect of fluctuations in people's satisfaction with s…
Longitudinal links between identity and substance use in adolescence
Identity development has been linked to substance use, but the directionality of this relationship remains unclear. We examined the longitudinal associations of educational and relational identity with substance use across three annual waves in 360 Dutch adolescents (M age = 13.7 years). We found three latent profiles using the identity dimensions of commitment, exploration, and reconsideration as indicators. Using classification probabilities to…
Linking Stressful Experiences and Psychological Problems
Stressful experiences have repeatedly been related to psychological problems. The current study extends previous work on stress and psychological problems by examining the link between stressful experiences and both internalizing (INT) and externalizing (EXT) problems. Additionally, individual differences are investigated by testing the moderating role of self-esteem. Questionnaire data of 750 adolescents aged 12–18 were collected and analyzed us…
