Queuing up in Post-War Britain
This article traces a history of the queue in post-war Britain, both in relation to its changing social organization and its shifting symbolism. In the immediate post-war period, with the continuation of rationing and shortages, the queue was exploited for its political capital by Conservative politicians like Winston Churchill, who equated queuing with meddling socialism. Edin's Hall fort, broch and settlement, Berwickshire (Scottish Borders)
A survey and excavations were undertaken in 1996 at Edin's Hall fort, broch and settlement — a monument in the care of Historic Scotland — in response to evidence of rabbit damage to the earthworks. The work has shown that the evolution of the site is considerably more complex than had been recognized hitherto. The broch may have been constructed during the lifetime of the settlement. The status and wealth of the site are discussed, and considere…

Hypercalcemia associated with parenteral amino acid and dextrose infusion
A patient receiving parenteral nutrition with an amino acid dextrose solution developed hypercalcemia which seemed related to the rate of nutrient infusion. In a retrospective study of patients receiving parenteral nutrition over a 3-month period six of 72 (8%) developed hypercalcemia. After changes in infusion rate there were corresponding changes in the serum calcium concentration. There was a significant correlation between the serum calcium c…
Carbon monoxide in school buses
Following an incident in which eight children became ill from carbon monoxide in a school bus, an investigation was made of CO levels in school buses in the Seattle area. The procedure selected for the evaluation was to test a large number of buses at a nearby ski resort. On the day selected for the sampling, over 200 buses arrived, bringing school children from a number of school districts in the Seattle are for skiing lessons. As they arrived, …
