Dino’s Story
This article reflects on my attempt to co-write the life history of Dino, a former member of two gangs in São Paulo, Brazil. Business elites and the political economy of philanthropy in West and Central Africa
This article analyses the philanthropic practices of wealthy businessmen in West and Central Africa and how they are rooted in different political economies. Current debates on African philanthropy focus on horizontal gifting as a form of solidarity. The “Nigerian mafia” feedback loop
This article looks at the discourses regarding Nigerian confraternities’ expansion to Europe. It analyses how networks of individuals working together for solidarity, economic or political objectives became categorized as organised crime or as a mafia. I use original data and police investigations, interviews with members and victims, judges, police officers, and journalists to show how the work of French and Italian institutions led to the emerg…
The global value chain of second-hand cars and scraps
The article draws on ethnographic observations of second-hand car and spare-parts traders in Ghana to analyse how these goods are traded over continents and how the value of a car is shaped by grounded practices and categories that I describe. The ‘debate’ and the politics of the PCC ’ s informal justice in São Paulo
This article is an ethnographic account of the Primeiro Comando da Capital’s informal justice. I introduce a key aspect of the ‘debate’, a dispute resolution process, which has not been discussed yet: its selective and fragmented nature. This refines the idea of normative orders and the discussion on how informal justices shape legal pluralism in Latin America. Development of the Brazilian Drug Market Toward Africa
Using existing research and original data, I discuss the development of a transatlantic drug market between Brazil and West Africa and its implications on Brazil’s development and drug trafficking value chain. Formal social work practice and education in Vietnam ended in 1975 with the “fall” of Saigon. As part of Vietnam's recent efforts to reestablish the social work profession, Ho Chi Minh Open University partnered with a U.S. School of Social Work for curriculum development training.
