An Oral History of the Bumidom
This article draws on interviews with people who migrated from the French Caribbean and Réunion in the 1960s to 1980s to offer an oral history of the BUMIDOM. The BUMIDOM (Bureau pour le développement des migrations dans les départements d’outre-mer) operated as a labour recruitment agency from 1963 to 1982, bringing some 160,000 workers from Martinique, Guadeloupe, Réunion and French Guiana to mainland France to work in transportation, health ca…
A counter-memory of the Bumidom through documentary
This article questions the extent to which documentary films can be considered sites of counter-memory, a memorial practice which challenges official versions of histories and memories. It analyzes two francophone documentary films: L’Avenir est ailleurs (2007), directed by Antoine Léonard-Maestrati, and BUMIDOM, des Français venus d’outre-mer (2010), directed by Jackie Bastide. This article examines themes of madness and mental illness in fictional and non-fictional writing by Guadeloupean author Gisèle Pineau. Madness is an important trope in French Caribbean literature that critiques the enduring legacies of colonization, slavery and forced displacement. From 1962 to 1983, 160,000 men and women migrated from Guadeloupe and Martinique to mainland France through the BUMIDOM (Bureau pour le développement des migrations dans les départements d’outre-mer).
