  • Lessons From Markey et al. (2015) and Bushman et al. (2015)

Open Access•Patrick M Markey, Mike Males et al.•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•2015

This article presents a response to the comment by B. J. Bushman, D. Romer, and P. E. Jamieson (2015). This reply addresses 2 issues raised by the commenters. First, they claim they and others have not made sensationalistic statements linking violent media to horrific acts of real-world violence. In response, we supply numerous examples of sensationalistic statements made by them and others. Second, they claim they did not expect violence in film…

  • Teenagers’ High Arrest Rates

    Open Access•Mike Males, Mike A Males et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•2013•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 11

The association of more crime with youthful age is widely accepted in social science. However, a literature search revealed no studies of the age-crime relationship that controlled for young ages’ economic disadvantage. This research gap is addressed using the California Criminal Justice Statistics Center’s arrest detail and Census poverty statistics for 2010. When poverty rates were controlled, younger and older ages’ violence disparities largel…

  • Authors’ Rejoinder to Respondents (Shulman, Steinberg, & Piquero, 2013)

    Open Access•Mike Males, Mike A Males et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•2013•Referencias: 1

Respondents, in “A Mistaken Account of the Age-Crime Curve: Response to Males and Brown,” dispute our finding that virtually all of the discrepancy in violent crime rates between adolescents/emerging adults versus older adults is explained not by young age per se but by higher poverty levels among the young. Our rejoinder argues that Respondents misunderstand our method, raise “ecological fallacy” objections that do not apply to our population-le…

  • Teenage Sex and Pregnancy

    Mike A Males•BOOK•Teenage Sex and Pregnancy•2010

This detailed, exhaustively documented account shows how and why just about everyone in today’s teen pregnancy debate is wrong—often disastrously so. Teenage Sex and Pregnancy: Modern Myths, Unsexy Realities presents a unique view of its subject by analyzing the extensive myths and fears that surround discussion of teenage sex and pregnancy, including their relationship to popular culture, poverty, adult sexual behaviors, and anxieties toward the…

  • Is Jumping off the Roof Always a Bad Idea? A Rejoinder on Risk Taking and the Adolescent Brain

    Open Access•Mike Males, Mike A Males•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•2009•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 5

Three respondents provide cogent commentary on the author’s first article, “Does the Adolescent Brain Make Risk Taking Inevitable? A Skeptical Appraisal.” Two respondent papers argue that the author mischaracterized valid and useful developmental and biological arguments affirming adolescents’ singular risk propensities; the third response raises innovative biological perspectives suggesting unique adolescent brain abilities that strongly challen…
