  • Hireability” prospects for known bystander reporters of sexual harassment

Open Access•Anjier Chen, Linda Klebe Trevino et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 12

Bystander intervention has been promoted across organizations to combat sexual harassment and its deleterious effects. However, the career consequences of bystander reporters (e.g., their hireability prospects inside and outside the organization)—those who report sexual harassment on behalf of coworkers—are not well understood. Based on the social identity and person perception literatures, which suggest that recruiters are motivated to hire cand…

  • Welcome to the club? Unethical behavior and proactivity in promotion and derailment decisions

    Open Access•Craig Crossley, Shannon G Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•2023•Referencias: 9

Challenging research that touts positive career outcomes for proactive individuals, this study takes the organizational decision‐maker's perspective and draws on tournament theory to qualify and better understand the link between manager proactivity and subsequent promotion into the executive ranks. Results from three studies support a moderated mediation model wherein proactivity is associated with leader schema matching, which, in turn, enhance…

  • Methodologies of Business Ethics Research

Open Access•Gary R Weaver, Linda Klebe Trevino•CHAPTER•Wiley Encyclopedia of Management•2015

  • (Un)Ethical Behavior in Organizations

Linda Klebe Trevino, Niki A den Nieuwenboer et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Psychology•2014

This review spotlights research related to ethical and unethical behavior in organizations. It builds on previous reviews and meta-analyses of the literature on (un)ethical behavior in organizations and discusses recent advances in the field. The review emphasizes how this research speaks to the influence of the organizational context on (un)ethical behavior, proceeding from a more macro to a more micro view on (un)ethical behavior and covering e…

  • Values Work

J Gehman, Linda Klebe Trevino et al.•ARTICLE•Academy of Management Journal•2013

Existing cognitive and cultural perspectives on values have undertheorized the processes whereby values come to be practiced in organizations. We address this lacuna by studying the emergence and performance of what we call values practices. Drawing on an analysis of the development of an honor code within a large business school, we theorize the multiple kinds of values work involved in dealing with pockets of concern, knotting local concerns in…

  • Why Employees Do Bad Things

    Open Access•Celia Moore, James R Detert et al.•ARTICLE•Personnel Psychology•2012

We examine the influence of individuals’ propensity to morally disengage on a broad range of unethical organizational behaviors. First, we develop a parsimonious, adult‐oriented, valid, and reliable measure of an individual's propensity to morally disengage, and demonstrate the relationship between it and a number of theoretically relevant constructs in its nomological network. Then, in 4 additional studies spanning laboratory and field settings,…

  • Embedding Ethical Leadership within and across Organization Levels

John M Schaubroeck, Sean T Hannah et al.•ARTICLE•Academy of Management Journal•2012

We develop and test a model linking ethical leadership with unit ethical culture, both across and within organizational levels, examining how both leadership and culture relate to ethical cognitions and behaviors of lower-level followers. The data were collected from 2,572 U.S. Army soldiers representing three organizational levels deployed in combat. Findings provide limited support for simple trickle-down mechanisms of ethical leadership but br…

  • Beyond righting the wrong

    Open Access•Meena Andiappan, Linda Klebe Trevino•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2011•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 141

We propose a future-oriented model that focuses on the reconciliation of the supervisor—subordinate relationship after a workplace injustice. First, we propose factors associated with the victim’s sensemaking process that influence the need for relationship reconciliation efforts: the seriousness of the violation, blame attribution, and equity sensitivity. We address the moderating effects of relationship characteristics, such as the existing tru…

  • Bad apples, bad cases, and bad barrels

    Jennifer J Kish-Gephart, David A Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Psychology•2010

As corporate scandals proliferate, practitioners and researchers alike need a cumulative, quantitative understanding of the antecedents associated with unethical decisions in organizations. In this meta-analysis, the authors draw from over 30 years of research and multiple literatures to examine individual ("bad apple"), moral issue ("bad case"), and organizational environment ("bad barrel") antecedents of unethical choice. Findings provide empir…

  • Speaking Up to Higher-Ups

    James R Detert, Linda Klebe Trevino•ARTICLE•Organization Science•2010

In this qualitative research, we enhance understanding of leader influences on employee voice perceptions by examining which leaders influence these perceptions and why these influences occur. We conducted 89 interviews in a high-tech multinational corporation with employees at multiple levels in two manufacturing and two R&D units that differed significantly on “speak up”-related items on a company-wide employee survey. Systematic analysis of th…

This article advances understanding of the antecedents and outcomes of moral disengagement by testing hypotheses with 3 waves of survey data from 307 business and education undergraduate students. The authors theorize that 6 individual differences will either increase or decrease moral disengagement, defined as a set of cognitive mechanisms that deactivate moral self-regulatory processes and thereby help to explain why individuals often make unet…

Blake E Ashforth, Dennis A Gioia et al.•ARTICLE•Academy of Management Review•2008

This special topic forum was designed to stimulate theory development on corruption in organizational life as a systemic and synergistic phenomenon. Given the multiple perspectives and bodies of literature that can be brought to bear on the phenomenon, we introduce the forum with a micro view, macro view, wide view, long view, and deep view of organizational corruption. These views suggest that there is much need for conceptual work that is integ…

We review this literature and attempt to provide a coherent portrait of the current state of the field. We discuss individual, group, and organizational influences and consider gaps in current knowledge and obstacles that l…

Kelly A Mollica, Barbara Gray et al.•ARTICLE•Organization Science•2003

This study examined the formation and persistence of homophilous, or same-race, friendship ties among racial minorities and whites in a “newcomer” setting. Homophilous ties provide valuable sources of mutual support but may limit racial minorities' access to resources and information in organizations. Study participants were first-year MBA students who entered a program at the same time. We measured network ties at two times: six weeks after the …

    Open Access•Linda Klebe Trevino, Michael Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2003•Citada por: 104•Referencias: 42

Senior executives are thought to provide the organization’s ethical ‘tone at the top’. We conducted an inductive interview-based study aimed at defining the perceived content domain of executive ethical leadership. We interviewed two types of key informants - corporate ethics officers and senior executives - about executive ethical leadership and then a contrasting category we labeled ‘ethically neutral’ leadership. • Cheating in Academic Institutions

Donald L Mccabe, Linda Klebe Trevino et al.•ARTICLE•Ethics & Behavior•2001

This article reviews 1 decade of research on cheating in academic institutions. This research demonstrates that cheating is prevalent and that some forms of cheating have increased dramatically in the last 30 years. This research also suggests that although both individual and contextual factors influence cheating, contextual factors, such as students' perceptions of peers' behavior, are the most powerful influence. In addition, an institution's …

Symbolic interactionism is presented as a theoretical approach for understanding media choice processes during managerial communications. In an exploratory study, 65 managers from 11 organizations were interviewed about communication incidents involving face-to-face, telephone, electronic mail, and written media. Managers were asked the reasons they chose the particular medium. A content analysis of the reasons suggests that three factors influen…

A field study of middle- and upper-level managers was undertaken to explain managers’ selection of communication media. The findings indicate that media vary in their capacity to convey information cues. Managers prefer rich media for ambiguous communications and less rich media for unequivocal communications. The data suggest that high performing managers are more sensitive to the relationship between message ambiguity and media richness than lo…

Executives should not take a reputation for ethical leadership for granted. Based on interviews with senior executives and corporate ethics officers, this article reveals that a reputation for executive ethical leadership rests on two essential pillars: the executive's visibility as a moral person (based upon perceived traits, behaviors, and decision-making processes) and visibility as a moral manager (based upon role modeling, use of the reward …
