The Great Law and the Longhouse
This masterful summary represents a major synthesis of the history and culture of the Six Nations from the mid-sixteenth century to the Canandaigua treaty of 1794. William N. Fenton, the dean of Iroquoian studies, has used primary sources extensively, in both French and English, to create a very readable narrative and an invaluable reference for all future scholars of Iroquois polity. The Great Law, a living tradition among the conservative Iroquo…

Return of Eleven Wampum Belts to the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy on Grand River, Canada
A case study in the repatriation of a museum collection illustrates the ethnohistorical research prerequisite to a decision to return the objects to the heirs of the original owners. It also treats several of the legal and ethical issues entering the decision. The ceremony of return highlights the Iroquois sense of appropriate behavior on such an occasion and the mutual satisfaction of both parties to the transaction. The writer was both a partic…

A Further Note on Iroquois Suicide
An earlier study of Iroquois suicide (Fenton I94I), which is unique in the Iroquoian literature and cited in comparative studies of the subject, lacked cases for the period (1790-1838) when Iroquois society suffered from rapid change. The present note fills this gap. It also bears on a theoretical issue of social disorganization related to deprivation and a radical change in the economy. The present cases conform to the two types of suicides disc…
Leadership in the Northeastern Woodlands of North America
MY ASSIGNMENT IN THIS SERIES was to deal with leadership in the Northeast during the eighteenth century. I was expected to cover how tribal communities dealt with outside powers. I was to answer: Who are leaders? Why are they leaders? And how do leaders change over time? These questions pose a quandary for the ethnologist turned historian because his native sources do not think in terms of centuries, but they know how to classify leaders; and the…
