Modelling Local Strontium Isotope Baselines from Human Isotopic Data Using Machine Learning
Estimating bioavailable strontium isotope baselines is a critical step in archaeological mobility studies. Conventional proxy-based approaches, which rely on environmental samples, such as soils, fauna, plants, or waters, are not always feasible and may be affected by environmental, taphonomic, or sampling-related biases. Here, we introduce MobSr, a machine-learning-based model designed to estimate probable local 87 Sr/ 86 Sr baselines directly f…
The Origins of Viking Age Dogs in Luistari, Eura, Finland
We used stable (δ 18 O) and radiogenic ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) isotopic proxies to investigate the origins of dogs ( Canis familiaris ) buried in Viking Age graves at Luistari, Finland. While all 13 dogs exhibited oxygen isotope values compatible with local surface waters, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios for two of the four dogs analyzed (graves 289 and 480) were compatible with a likely origin in southern Scandinavia. The findings align with previous evidence of th…
Multi-isotopic evidence reveals the emergence of a cosmopolitan community at the Luistari cemetery in Eura, Finland, during the early Medieval period (600–1130 CE)
This study examines the role of the Eura region as a nexus linking the inland with Baltic Sea trade routes. Luistari cemetery, spanning from the early Merovingian to Medieval periods, provides key insights into South-Western Finland’s socio-economic structure and communication networks. Despite its significance, this burial community’s chronological dynamics and regional role remain poorly understood. Using multi-isotopic evidence contextualised …
The first collective Neolithic megalithic tomb in Oman
A newly discovered grave in Wadi Nafūn, Oman, features a unique burial structure, combining monumental architecture and the collective deposition of human remains from multiple Neolithic groups. Detailed analysis of the burial community reveals new insights into Neolithic rituals and subsistence strategies during the Holocene Humid Period in southern Arabia
Investigating the Neolithic Presence in South-Central Oman
Over the past decade, extensive surveys have been carried out in the wider area surrounding the city of Duqm (south-central Oman). During fieldwork in 2023, research on the Neolithic encampment in the Wādī Ṣayy area was conducted. Numerous locations surrounding this large wadi have yielded evidence of Neolithic occupation. The proximity to chert outcrops and the presence of elevated fluvial terrace systems overlooking the wadi floodplains likely …
The first investigation of an Iron Age shell midden in Oman
Dietary changes seen through the isotope analysis of the La Tène burial site of Prosmyky (Bohemia, 4th-3rd century BCE)
Dietary reconstruction using carbon and nitrogen isotopes has been applied to the La Tène population buried at Prosmyky, a large cemetery of the 4th-3rd centuries BCE in northwest Bohemia. The analysis of bone collagen from 55 individuals showed a diet that did not differ noticeably from other contemporary sites in the region. However, chronologically sensitive development in diet, with gradually increasing δ13C values, was present, signifying a …

Claiming the land or protecting the goods? The Duchcov hoard in Bohemia as a proxy for ‘Celtic migrations’ in Europe in the 4th century BCE
Central Sites and the Development of Rural Settlements from the Middle to Late La Tène Period in Central Moravia
At a certain point in time, there were two central places in central Moravia: an older unfortified central agglomeration near the present-day village of Němčice nad Hanou and a younger oppidum at Staré Hradisko. Each of this centres had its own approach to raw materials, orientation of the socio-economic contacts, and possibly political focus as well. Němčice, being located at one of the main branches of the Amber Road, connected the Middle Danub…
Bohemia at the End of the La Tène Period
The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of current knowledge concerning the late La Tène chronology in Bohemia and Moravia during the LT C2–D2 phases (150–0 BC) with an emphasis on developments in the latter stages of the La Tène occupation of the Middle Danube zone (LT D1b – LT D2). During the first century BC, specifically from the 70s and 60s BC onwards, a succession of events caused a rapid chain of reactions that resulted in the aban…
Rituals, Hoards and Travellers? Archaeometry of the Iron Age Bronze Wheel Amulets
This paper aims to discuss the origin and significance of the so-called spoked-wheel amulets from the late Iron Age (3 rd to 1 st century BC). The type with eight spokes, which most resembles a real chariot wheel, was discovered to be made of a specific alloy containing a large amount of lead and a significant amount of antimony, plus traces of silver and arsenic. This combination of elements signifies the use of a copper known as fahlore (tetrah…
Why did they move to a barren land? Iron Age settlement and the consequences for primary woodlands in the uplands of southern Bohemia, Czech Republic
Oppida, Production and Social Status – Complexity of the Late La Tène Period in Central Europe
The paper deals with the late Iron Age oppida and their position within the contemporary settlement hierarchy. It aims to examine the socio-economic structure of the late La Tène oppida in central Europe: their social and economic potential in terms of the food production and social structure in relation to the production mechanisms. The economy of the oppida could be explained partially as a response to environmental conditions and climate; econ…
