Tales and Traditions of the Nganasans
Boris Osipovich Dolgikh became established as an ethnographer while working as an enumerator for the 1926–27 Russian census (Savolskul 2004). He was especially interested in the peoples of the Samoyedic linguistic group, the Entsy and Nganasans, as well as the ethnogenesis of northern peoples, clan, and tribal composition at the time of first Russian contact and the evolution of clan-tribal structure. During the 1960s and 1970s, he systematically…
In Memoriam (Henry N. Michael, 1912–2006)
Dr Michael's anthropological work included studies of Eskimos and other peoples in the Arctic of Alaska and Siberia, including translation of work from original Russian works. Early in his professional career and continuing long after retirement, Dr Michael was interested in questions about the validity of radiocarbon dating with respect to archaeology, and he played an important role in the effort to develop a "calibration curve" for 14 C dates …

The extension of the bristlecone pine chronology, which is, thus far, the only complete tree-ring-dated series that extends beyond 6000 bc and which is used for the calibration of radiocarbon dates, has been going on over the past 22 years, that is, ever since Schulman (1956; 1958) established the extremely old ages of the bristlecone pine. The few people in this world who search for very old wood samples to extend a dendrochronology may apprecia…

University of Pennsylvania Radiocarbon Dates XII
This list is a continuation of Univ. of Pennsylvania Dates VII (Radiocarbon, 1965, v. 7, p. 179-186). It includes results for samples of Sequoia gigantea and for Pinus aristata , most of which were tree-ring dated at the Lab. of Tree-Ring Research, Univ. of Arizona. All sequoia and bristlecone pine samples have been corrected for deviations in C 13 /C 12 ratios. The δC 13 values listed represent the deviations (multiplied by 2) of the samples mea…

Measurements of samples of known age have been undertaken in this laboratory since its beginning in 1951 when it was found that modern wood samples taken from the outer rings of young trees did not afford a basis of counter calibration consistent with archaeologically dated samples (Ralph, 1955). This depletion was explained by Suess (1955). Subsequent measurements of samples representative of the early Egyptian dynasties, however, revealed that …
