Sex differences in health status, healthcare utilization, and costs among individuals with elevated blood pressure
Men and women with elevated blood pressure in Kenya have different health care utilization behaviors, cost and economic burdens, and self-perceived health status. Awareness of these sex differences can help inform targeted interventions in these populations
Global Burden of Cardiovascular Diseases and Risk Factors, 1990–2019
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), principally ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke, are the leading cause of global mortality and a major contributor to disability. This paper reviews the magnitude of total CVD burden, including 13 underlying causes of cardiovascular death and 9 related risk factors, using estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019. GBD, an ongoing multinational collaboration to provide comparable and consisten…

Barriers and Facilitators to Nurse Management of Hypertension
Nurse management of hypertension is a potentially feasible strategy to address the human resource challenge of hypertension control in low-resource settings. However, successful implementation will be contingent upon addressing barriers such as access to medications, quality of care, training of nurses, health education, and stigma
Development and validation of a questionnaire to evaluate lifestyle-related behaviors in elementary school children
The KAH-questionnaire is a reliable instrument to assess the efficacy of the SI! Program on instilling healthy lifestyle-related behaviors in elementary school children
Parental and self-reported dietary and physical activity habits in pre-school children and their socio-economic determinants
Objective To assess the agreement between self-reported and parent-reported dietary and physical activity habits in children; and to evaluate the socio-economic determinants of healthier habits (Mediterranean diet and physical activity) among children. Design Cross-sectional analysis of children recruited to a cluster-randomized controlled trial (Program SI!). Information about children’s and parents’ dietary and physical activity habits was obta…
A cluster randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of a school-based behavioral intervention for health promotion among children aged 3 to 5
NCT01579708
The Program SI! intervention for enhancing a healthy lifestyle in preschoolers
NCT01579708, Evaluation of the Program SI! for Preschool Education: A School-Based Randomized Controlled Trial (Preschool-SI!)
Portuguese migration to the Canary Islands
As a part of a wider analysis of population and genetic exchange between Spain and Portugal, the long-term pattern of Portuguese immigration to the Canary Islands was studied by means of the frequency of Portuguese surnames. A database of 1,995,833 individuals was obtained from the Spanish National Statistics Institute (2006). Among the 826 most frequent surnames to appear, 79 surnames of Portuguese origin were selected. The distribution of these…
Interpopulation Relationship by Isonymy
The application of the isonymic method to establish interpopulation relationships is made difficult by such factors as: (1) a small population size; (2) the subdivision of the population into ethnosocial groups; and (3) the existence of individuals born extramaritally. The present study analyzes the validity of the isonymy method in populations where such difficulties exist. Lasker's R(ij) relationship coefficients were calculated in base to mari…
Consanguinity in Spain
Information on consanguinity in Spain was reanalyzed in order to obtain a more complete picture of consanguinity patterns by considering temporal, geographical, demographic, and economic factors. To obtain data on consanguineous marriages, we reviewed 106 published references. Only populations with homogeneous geographical characteristics, economic activities, transportation facilities, and the like, were considered. Two-way analysis of variance …
Determinants of protogenetic interval in a West Mediterranean rural population
This paper analyzes the protogenetic interval determinants and the influence on family size. The data came from La Alpujarra (Southeast Spain), consisting on a sample of 847 families marrying through-out the first half of the present century. The marital fertility includes 85% deliveries, 5% premarital births and the remaining 10% premarital conceptions. The protogenetic interval was clearly associated with the reproductive success since family s…
Anthropometry and strength relationship
Based upon 303 students from the Complutense University at Madrid (100 males and 203 females), aged between 21 and 29 years, the results of nine anthropometric measurements and four strength tests were evaluated. Males and females were analyzed separately in order to determine whether the relationship of body typology to physical performance varies according to gender. Regarding strength, maximum gender differences were observed for pulling stren…
Red-Green Colour Blindness in the Tormes-Alberche Valley (Ávila-Central Spain)
A population from a Central Spanish region (Tormes-Alberche Valley) has been investigated for the presence of red-green colour vision defects. A sample of 998 subjects (469 male and 529 female) was analyzed. To identify colour vision defects, Ishihara test plates were used. The red-green colour blindness percentage obtained was 4.69 +/- 0.976% for males (2.13% protan and 2.56% deutan types) and none of the females tested were found to be colour b…
